I have a SUA 1000XL and one SUA24XLBP, both purchased from APC in 2003.
Load is very light with only one or two occurances of total discharge.
Lately the fan on the 1000xl comes on for 10min every 30min. The sides of the case are very warm.
(The 24xlbp is cool to the touch.)
The 1000xl self tests ok, there are no indicator lamps stating the battery(s) need to be replaced.
No powerchute sw monitoring at the moment...
How can I be sure the problem isn't the hardware before spending money for fresh batteries?
(APC chat and phone support was not conclusive)
Thank you,
Flav

yes i agree. worst case, if you buy the batteries through APC, you can return them within 30 days of purchase but may be subject to a restocking fee 😕
keep us updated if you can!

are you able to take the batteries out and look at them to see if they are a bit swollen or anything?
the four reasons the fan may come on are:
1. The UPS is on battery.
2. The UPS is charging the battery.
3. The UPS has a load greater than 75%.
4. The internal temperature of the UPS has reached greater than 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). Note, for 4G units (model number begins with SUA, the temperature range has changed. For these models, the internal temperature will have to be greater than 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)
at least if you install powerchute on a computer and hook it up, we can see what the internal temperature is but i'd take a look at the batteries themselves first to see if there is anything obviously wrong with them.
the batteries are ~6 years old so a proactive replacement wouldnt be a bad idea if we make sure the UPS isnt at fault first.

Thanks for your reply.
I know I need to physically check the batteries for any signs of stress. Hopefully it'll be obvious e.g. swollen, thus reducing the risk of investing in new batteries (but then still having a problem with the HW).
