Hi guys,
OK it's old but still appears to be working normally - all tests pass including the brain-dead check. Our problem is as follows:
We replaced the battery this week, however when testing we are experiencing an un-expected behavior; after running on battery power and hitting the low-battery alarm, we then return to normal line power but the UPS will still power-cycle and re-set all connected equipment. Is this normal? Powerchute is running mostly default settings, this behavior is also occuring on a rack mounted version of this same UPS. We would expect (and would like) for the UPS when returning to line power even after a low battery alarm, to NOT terminate or inturrupt power delivery. Could this be because we are employing a command script to shut down other servers? Do we need to run a seperate script on resume of normal power? If so what would it look like?
Thanks,
Mark L

What software are you using? It looks like the software is ordering Windows to shut down and continue with shut down to guarantee 8 minutes after shut down process is initiated.
Do the outlets lose power when the power is returned without any software connected? If so, it's a hardware problem. If not, it's something in your software.

i think if the UPS hits the low battery alarm, there is no way to stop the shutdown counter and the UPS needs to reboot. i have a couple of questions though.
•How much total runtime do you have?
•What is your low battery signal set to? (default is 2 min)
this situation i would suspect to be rare unless your settings are awkward and set incorrectly so im assuming you are doing this during a test? this shouldnt have anything to do with your scripts/command files.

Hey winna,
Total runtime is around 18min @ 52% load. Low battery is indeed set to the 2 min default. It seems rather strange if it is in fact unavoidable for the UPS to power-cycle in this example. If line power returns why not stay up?

under normal circumstances, yeah it should stay up but during the low battery duration is another story.
also, if you have powerchute network shutdown installed and those clients shutdown, they wont restart till the UPS is rebooted.
but if you pull the plug from the wall on the UPS and let it run for say, 5 minutes, and plug it back in, does it come back on correctly? or does it reboot in that scenario too?

Hi winna,
Yes it will continue the shutdown of the protected system. I've done this very test. I will note that it did enter the protected system shutdown sequence and was running our script. Never the less, the Protected system should not continue to shutdown on power resume imo. I also cannot find any setting that would control this behavior. What is the default action for an APC UPS in this circumstance? There is the 'Power Restored' action...do we need to run a command script for this event that would abort the shut-down? And if so, how or where can I get info on that?
Thanks in advance, I appreciate the help 🙂

Here are our settings. Current runtime @ 52% load is 18 min on a full charge.
Time required for shutdown sequence: 8min
Low battery signal: 2min
Command file: Yes
Command file duration: 3min
OS shutdown delay: 5min
OS shutdown type: Shutdown
Enable OS reboot: Yes
UPS turnon battery capactity: 0%
UPS turnon delay: 0min
If we go on battery power for say 10min we cannot avoid a shutdown even when power comes back.

Once a UPS starts its shutdown procedure, it will continue and shut itself off. The UPS itself knows it is doing a graceful turn off. There is no way to abort the graceful turn off once the UPS initiates it, even if the UPS gets utility back DURING the shutdown. Your best bet is to lower all of your delays so that the required time of shutdown sequence is lower, if possible
