I'm looking for more information about some SNMP objects, specifically the upsAdvBatteryReplaceIndicator.0 object. My UPS, the APC Smart-UPS X 2200 with management card, returns the value noBatteryNeedsReplacing(1), as expected since it is new, but I'm wondering what the criteria are that make it return its only other value batteryNeedsReplacing(2). If anyone can point me to documentation that discusses the SNMP management objects in more detail, I'd really appreciate it. The "MIB Reference Guide" offers no details, only general how-to info. I might not have to monitor this value explicitly if it is derived from other measurements like upsBasicBatteryLastReplaceDate or upsAdvStateTotalTimeOnBattery, etc.
Thanks in advance!
TimHL

Yeah, the description via MIB browser just says: Indicates whether the UPS batteries need replacing.
The UPS self test compares the voltage drop while on battery to a known good value and if it is out of tolerance, the replace battery LED is illuminated and you'd see this value as 2.

Hi Tim,
That indicates the UPS has detected a bad battery. The small UPSes typically do a self-test of the battery every two weeks. Batteries that fail the test should be replaced within a few weeks or they may bulge and vent.

Good to know that the upsAdvBatteryReplaceIndicator.0 is based on the success or failure of the UPS's self test. Even better to know that the self test involves checking the voltage drop while on battery, and that the upsAdvBatteryReplaceIndicator isn't dependent on other criteria, like age (I assume you would have said so, had that been the case).
Thanks to both of you!
