I saw in a previous post that you can obtain a new faceplate for the 9631NMC. Apparantly the early versions had the wrong slot pattern. I have Hundreds of the 9617 card. Is there something available for those? Recently the techs have been snapping the slots to make them fit in the newer 750's we have purchased. However, I have to configure the network on an older ups using serial comm. and then put in new ups. So far it seems to work. Is there any reason not to do this? I have yet to figure out a way to talk to a 9630 card while in the new ups. Should this work? I have requested a serial cable through website and am going to see what I get. Any answers would be helpful. It would be nice to be able to correct configurations at the card on occasion.

Robert,
AP9617s are not supported with newer Smart-UPS 750s and should not work. The AP9630 ships with a 9 pin Serial to barrel jack connection cable. The part number is 940-0299. If you look at the card you will see a round connector labeled Console. That is where the cable connects.
To configure the cards you can connect the card to your network and run the configuration wizards without using the cable or connect the cable and Hyperterminal into the card to configure it. Instruction are available in the installation guide.

Hi Robert,
AP9617 is not compatible or supported with the SMT750 UPS and the fact that you cannot install AP9617 into an SMT750 without breaking the tabs is by design. AP9631 as you said, is compatible and some earlier units did need a new faceplate but that was for AP9631 manufactured in a few of the weeks of 2009. You'll probably find that AP9617 may power up in an SMT750 if you forced it in but it won't actually communicate with the UPS or provide status information.
You should be using AP9630 or AP9631 (or nowadays AP9635) in an SMT750. We don't recommend breaking the tabs because they serve the purpose of helping with compatibility. I don't think anything functionally will be wrong but now this mechanism just won't work to help identify an incompatible device.
As I noted, yes, AP9630 should work. You can configure an IP address on AP9630 through the SMT750LCD front panel I believe or any of the other methods listed here -> http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156064
AP9630 (as well as all other NMC2's) ship with the right cable - 940-0299A. It plugs into your PC and the Console jack on the AP9630/31/35 itself. On the older AP9617, you had to connect to it through the UPS which is not how the newer stuff works. Hope that helps get you started.
For some additional general NMC compatibility information, here is a knowledge base article -> http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA237786
