I've got an older SMT3000i Smart-UPS that I'm trying to firmware upgrade. When I run the firmware upgrade wizard, I'm informed that an upgrade using the usb-cable can't be performed and I need to connect a serial cable.
At the back of the unit all I can find is the usb port, an RJ-45 console port and some sort of 4pin remote management connector. No serial port.

Can you verify the part number on the DB9 end of the cable? It's likely that this was not the proper cable.

Hello Gary,
The RJ-45 port is how you connect serially to the UPS (confusing I know). The cable looks like the one in this link:

I actually found that cable just lying around and connected it to the RJ-45 port. The UPS just died as soon as i connected the DB-9 to my Serial to USB converter. What's up with that?
On the display it said something like remote turn of signal received.
