SMT-1500C Input Circuit Breaker Not Installed

Hello all

This post pertains to an operating SMT-1500C unit purchased from APC on 09/08/2019.

Reference the input power circuit breaker on the back of the SMT-1500C.

During a recent power outage, it was necessary to determine why this unit didn't switch back over to wall power when it was restored and stable.  One of the recommended troubleshooting steps was to ensure the input power circuit breaker is reset to on.  However, I could not latch the breaker and it seemed to be non-functional.  In the process of resolving that, I was surprised to learn that according to APC, this SMT-1500C does not include an input power circuit breaker (although the breaker button and label is present).  Their statement is "Smart-UPS greater than 1500VA have an input breaker which must be in the ON position in order to operate." This is a Smart-UPS SMT-1500C which is not greater than 1500VA.  As you can see from the attached picture, there is no breaker installed, so it will not trigger and cannot be reset to ON.  I reset input power externally to the UPS, and now the unit is fully functional.  I found a reference to this fact in the attached support incident record published in August 2018 (also attached).  The support incident record is located here: Support >> Browse >> FAQs >> FA156604.

I welcome any comments.

A. Ramsay

Hi,

The attached photo shows the circuit breaker and it appears to be in the on position. If it were in the off position it would be protruding more.

That picture sure looks like a breaker. If it was tripped the white button would have been popped out much further than it is and would have pushed back in with a nice "click". As it doesn't appear tripped pushing it won't really result in anything other than a tiny bit of movement. There is no way to operate the breaker externally, it'll only pop on overload.
