SMC vs SMT - Component Quality Difference

I am looking to buy a UPS for my home system. I have narrowed it down to the SMT and SMC lines, probably the 1000 of each line. From my reading thus far I know they have different LCD display, different battery, and the SMT allows for the network interface cards... My question however is about the actual internals, and any efficiency and/or quality differences. Basically, are they identical besides the lcd/battery/slot, or are there internal differences that make one better than the other? Better capacitors, design, efficiency, etc. As well, does one model have a lower failure rate than the other?

Bottom line, I dont need the slot.. The LCD on the SMT is nicer, as is the slightly better runtime... but none of those add value per the 100 dollar difference, for me anyway.. what would is if one has a better quality construction overall, and/or better reliability.

Can anyone speak to these more technical details?

One other thing, tho I dont think there will be a difference.. Is noise level. This is for personal use for my gaming system, so the less noise the better. (i dont care about noise when on battery, as i'll just be shutting down anyway. but on line power, i want as much quiet as possible)

Other than the difference in battery, I've not found any significant internal difference between the SMT and SMC 1000 model UPSes. I will qualify that somewhat by saying that my only example so far of an SMC1000 model UPS is a few years old. It has no cooling fan. By comparison, I think current production SMT1000 models do have the fan. It's not a loud fan, but you certainly might hear it in a quiet room.

The SMC model's display will turn off after a period of inactivity. I'm not sure if the SMT models will do the same when they are supplying power to their outlets.

Both models support firmware upgrades and can have their alarms disabled at all times. One key difference between the SMT and SMC models is that of Modbus communication protocol support. That's really only important if you want to comprehensively monitor the UPS using a third-party software solution (such as apcupsd or Network UPS Tools). Only the SMT models support Modbus as of this writing.
