Hi,
in a customer situation a SMART UPS RT 3000VA with SNMP Card crashed totally
after a power outage.
The power outage occured exactly during the time when I was with PCNS logged into
my Windows XP Client and I was checking the log entries of the UPS.
After power comes up again the UPS don't turns on any more. Also the FAN is not running.
Every three seconds a beep comes out. Thats all.
This UPS system runs some years without errors and I tested in this time 50 times
power outage. The UPS switched on battery and switched back after power restore
without errors. Battery is good. Every 14 days automatic testing.
2 hours before that happens I tested again a power outage and power
restoring and all is OK.
The Software I use is Power Chute Network Shutdown PCNS and its working
very fine.
Does anyone have an idea what do to? I can't image that the UPS has an defect.

can you get the log files from any of the powerchute network shutdown clients or the network management card? this would help a great deal.
instructions on getting network management card logs are here: http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9321

Hi,
thanks for reply.
Of course I think about this, but:
- The SNMP-Card is NOT under voltage, no blinking of the LEDs
- Also I can't get contact via the RS232C connection with 2400 Baud.
I can't switch on the UPS anymore.
Do the UPS have a kind of main fuse on the motherboard which are broken?
I think the bug is at the beginning of the power.
Do you have an idea?

First you should replace the UPS batteries ( Having 12 V each) because issue is in UPS not in NMC Card.
UPS can switch on without NMC Card So remove the NMC then check if ups is working or not?

Aftab

Hi,
thanks for your Idea.I have i too.
I replace the SNMP Card but the UPS is not working.
But I have the solution now.
The Beep Code every 4 Seconds mean the UPS can't get contact with the Battery
or in other words the UPS can not start because the Batteries are defect.
I take my measuring instrument and without Input Power I see 206V from
both Batteries together. OK, this is fine I thought.
But: Plugging in the Power the voltage shows 92V. So the Batteries are defect
and have to be replaced by new ones. Ths UPS need a voltage of 170 V to start.
It is very interessting for me to see that the Battery Test I did every 2 weeks don't
show an error.
But I have learned that I have to do once or twice a year a Loadtest with the UPS.
This is better as looking into the log and see the Battery Test is working.

hi,
sory for late reply,
In SURT Series minimum Voltage required for Each Battery is 86 VDC.So please verifiy while using multimeter what are the each Battery Module Voltages ?
I think each Battery Module Voltages are less then 86 Volts so thats why UPS is not Switching on.
So if UPS d,nt Switch on so it will not possible to Shitf on Bypass Mode.
2nd thing if you d,nt want to purchase new Battery Modules for your UPS then if you have another SURT Series UPS then you can utilize its batteries for Switching on the Faulty UPS.

Some news to this old UPS of type SURT3000XLI.
I remember that of course this UPS has a Manual Bypass Switch at the back.
And so I pull both batteries out and switch to Manual Bypass.
Then switching Input Power on but nothing happens!
So now it has nothing to do with a battery anymore. I don't want to buy two
new batteries, putting these into the UPS and the UPS is NOT starting.
So I think now the UPS has an defect. But I'm disappointed beccause this
very expensive UPS refused to obey with the MAIN FUNCTION, don't cut off
the Output Power if the Input Power fails.
Some points to think about:
- There was no "please replace the Battery" Alarm with LED ON at the Front Panel
- All 2 weeks the Battery check returns OK
- Manual Bypass Switch is not working; LED is not ON.
- One day before breakdown of this UPS I removed the Input Power for 5 minutes and all was OK

Hi Aftab Ghauri,
well, thank you. This is very interested.
I forgot the following and I will repeat your ideas:
- I can only switch from Online to Bypass with the switch at the back IF THE UPS IS ON.
- This is now OK and I understand.
- In other words: The UPS has to start before.
- This is an ONLINE UPS and we need the voltage level you wrote in the post (86 volt per Battery)
- This is also OK
- Input Power is not connected at this time.
- I measure for one Battery a voltage of 103 Volts or 206 Volts for both but THIS IS NOT UNDER LOAD.
- I measure for both Batteries a voltage of 92 Volts during pressing the ON Switch. This is under load.
- That means one Battery has a voltage of 46V under load and this is too less for starting the UPS.
- If you agree with my sentences both Batteries are defekt (for your: both batteries have an age of 6.5 years..........)
Regards, Hans

one clarification on SURT3000 - the bypass is a logical/electronic bypass - it is not really a manual or mechanical bypass in my mind because its not a physical switch that moves with or without good DC voltage on other UPS types.
