Problems with Power Chute plus reload

We have been running the Power Chute Plus software for years just great on an old Windows 95 machine connected via RS232 cable to a Smart UPS 1400 with no problems. That computer died so we have tried hooking up the same UPS to a Windows 2000 Pro machine using either the same RS232 setup or adapted to a USB port. We are not on any network just a stand alone pc. After loading the software it says that it is communicating with the UPS but yet we are unable to see any data and the three vertical display columns that we had for voltage and load and such will not display. Can someone advise please? I think the version of power chute plus is 5.0.1. Thanks, Steve
