Problem getting my AP9617 network management cards configured

Hi all
I just bought a few AP9617 network management cards for our server UPS but I'm having one heck of a time to configure them. I reset them(with the hole on the back) and connect them to our switch, but I would not get any IP address asigned(DHCP), my other cards work just fine. Please help
Thanks
Andy

Thanks for replying!!

As I understand, I can only disable use of the APC cookie if I connect using the serial port. However, I'm told that a former administrator tried to connect through the serial port, and that caused the UPS to shut down! Maybe he was using a wrong serial cable, but I don't want to risc my job trying that right now.

I just don't understand why it doesn't take an IP address when I have the APC cookie configured properly.

do you require the use of the cookie or can you disable using that option to get around this?

Andy,

For starters, great name.

As for the cards, do you have the APC Vendor Cookie installed in your DHCP server under Scope Option 43? If not, the cards by default yes are set to BootP/DHCP, but unless that cookie is installed in the server, it will not auto assign. You can manually assign via Hyperterminal, or gain access to them Via Hyperterminal and set the DHCP cookie to on. If you can wait until Monday @ 9am EST, I can post the binary for the DHCP server.

Actually, if my memory serves me right, it's in the NMC manual that you should have.

Hi Andy,

By default, the DHCP option requires Option 43 to be set on your DHCP server for the network management card to accept the IP address. The option relates to a vendor specific cookie. You can login via the serial cable/serial port to disable this and then without requiring the cookie, the card should obtain an IP no problem. You can log in to the card with the default username/password of apc/apc and then go to the network section, TCP/IP, boot mode and I believe its under advanced when DHCP is enabled. But once you change the requirement of the cookie to disabled, make sure to save the changes.

Here is an article that goes over other ways of getting the network management cards some IP addresses: [Try this|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3061].
The article makes note of the Device IP configuration wizard which is on the CD that comes with the cards, this can also be downloaded from the apc.com website under Software and Firmware -> Wizards and configurators if you don't have the CD handy.

I attached the online guide that will help with this if you have any other general questions. This applies to the newer firmware that is shipping on cards currently.

Here is a little more info about option 43 that is required by default:

Following, in hexadecimal format, is an example of a Vendor Specific Information
option that contains the APC cookie:
Option 43 = 0x01 0x04 0x31 0x41 0x50 0x43
• Boot Mode Transition. Tag 2, Len 1, Data 1/2
This option 43 setting enables or disables Remain in DHCP & BOOTP mode after
accepting TCP/IP settings, which, by default, is disabled.
– A data value of 1 enables Remain in DHCP & BOOTP mode after accepting
TCP/IP settings. Whenever the Management Card reboots, it will request its
network assignment first from a BOOTP server, and then, if necessary, from a
DHCP server.
– A data value of 2 disables the option Remain in DHCP & BOOTP mode after
accepting TCP/IP settings option. The TCP/IP Configuration setting option
switches to DHCP when the Management Card accepts the DHCP response.
Whenever the Management Card reboots, it will request its network assignment
from a DHCP server only.
Following, in hexadecimal format, is an example of a Vendor Specific Information
option that contains the APC cookie and the disable setting for Boot Mode
Transition:
Option 43 = 0x01 0x04 0x31 0x41 0x50 0x43 0x02 0x01 0x01

Guys, with the help I've gotten, I was able to reconfigure all 9 APC9617 cards, however there's one UPS that when I connect to it using the web interface, instead of showing the status of Smart-UPS 2200 RM, it doesn't show anything but "A UPS was found that is not supported by this application. Check the CD-ROM for the correct APP or contact APC technical support.". it seems like the management card doesn't recognize the UPS or vice versa. I have tried to reset the card, no success
Thanks again
Andy

This happens usually when the wrong Application module is on the network management card. For instance, you are using a Smart UPS but have the Symmetra application loaded.

We will need to make sure the APP is 'sumx' on this card, if its not it will need to be reflashed/upgraded which is very easy to do.

If its older firmware on the card, check under help on the left hand side and choose "about system." This should list the card model and serial # as well as the AOS and APP names and versions.

If its newer firmware, at the top there should be an administration tab. Click that then the general sub section. Click on about on the left hand side and the AOS and APP names and versions should be listed.

Please post what it says but mostly likely if you dont see anything that says 'sumx' thats our problem. 'sy' is what you would see for the Symmetra Application Module or a couple of other different ones could be there as well.

If you need to reflash it. you can go to the software and firmware section of our site ([located here|http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/index.cfm], choose firmware upgrades - network management card to see the different versions) and download the Smart UPS/Matrix firmware appropriate for the Smart UPS that you have. Upgrading/reflashing the firmware does not reboot the UPS incase you were wondering.

Hope this helps!

I've read this thread thoroughly, but still can't get my AP9617 to register on the network. I've included a screenshot of my dhcp scope options. I've tried all kinds of variations of the cookie, pressing reset between every change, but still nothing works. What am i missing?
