Problem configuring AP9617 Network Management Card

We recently bought a Smart-UPS 9000 which came with an AP9617 NMC pre-installed. The UPC is great, everything's plugged in and barely any load. However, when we eventually got round to attempting to monitor the thing, we hit problems. Initially tried just using the Device IP Configuration Wizard and it just doesn't find/recognise the card. Tried TCP/IP, network cable, serial port using cable supplied and used all the methods detailed in all your forum threads but nothing works. Next tried linking a PC direct, nothing. Tried installing your PowerChute software and still nothing finds the card. The left light on the back is flashing orange and the right light is off - as usual this particular configuration of lights is not mentioned in any of the trouble shooting guides. We suspect the card is faulty but would appreciate confirmation before we send it back, thanks.

Unfortunately, it appears the reset button does not work either, even tried holding it in for over ten seconds, same flashing orange light.

Dave,

If the Status LED is off, it means that the card is not receiving power or is in a boot up state. If the Link/RX/TX LED status is Flashing Orange, it means that the card is receiving data packets at 100mbps.

I suggest you to reseat the NMC into the UPS smart slot bay and see if it helps. You will need to turn the UPS off, unplug from the wall and remove the connected equipment. Then push and hold the off button for about 10 seconds. Then, remove and reseat the card and bring the UPS on line.

If the NMC reseat does not work, then I suggest you to check if the UPS smart slot is functioning. You will need to brain dead the UPS and then remove the NMC from the UPS smart slot bay.

And then try connecting direct to the UPS.

To connect:
Connect the 940-0024 or 940-1524 cable between the UPS serial port and Computer.
Open Hyperterminal
Select appropriate COM port
Use COM port settings: 2400, 8, none, 1, none
At terminal screen, press Shift+y
You should get an "SM" response after issuing Shift+y.

This is a useful step to determine if the NMC is bad or the port on the UPS is bad.

Do you have another APC Smart UPS with working NMC installed? If so, I would swap the cards to discover if the issue lies with the NMC in question or the UPS smart slot bay.

Welcome to the APC Forum Dave.

I hope this would help you diagnose your problem. I've listed what does the indicator means. By the default the network management card comes set for DHCP/BootP

Status LED
- OFF means the card is not receiving power or is in a boot up state.
- Solid Green means that the card has valid IP settings.
- Solid Orange means that the card has a hardware failure.
- Flashing Green means that the card does not have a valid IP settings.
- Flashing Orange means that the card is making a BootP request
- Rapidly Alternating Green and Orange means the card is booting up.
- Slowly Alternating Green and Orange means the card is making a DHCP request

Link LED
- OFF means that there is not power, the network cable is not connected, or the device such as a switch or a hub connected to the card is not active
- Solid Green means that the card is communicating at 10mbps.
- Solid Orange means that the card is communicating at 100mbps.
- Flashing Green means that the card is receiving data packets at 10mbps.
- Flashing Orange means that the card is receiving data packets at 100mbps.

I also suggest calling the APC Customer Care Center for your region to help you diagnose it better.

Hi guys, thanks for all your helpful hints. Unfortunately this is a beast of a UPS and we've plugged all the servers, switches and phone systems into it, so we'll have to try most of these suggestions over a weekend. We're 99% sure the card is dead, so will speak to our reseller who should just get us a new one. Thanks.
