I have a scenario that i need assistance with. And i am aware it is not supported.. just want to either get rid of it or try and get it to worl.
I have running VmWare 3.0.2 and want to try and get parachute installed on the server, i have done the documentation from APC and know about the firewall ports that need to be opened as well. This is done and is successful on one of the servers, when i went to do it on another server it seems someone has installed it already, but when i try and login to the server using the web browser (http://servername:3052/) it asks for a user name and password which i have no idea what it is.
1. How do i reset it, i have already uninstalled the software and even removed the firewall ports from the server and it seems that the application is still running on the server, because even after removing the ports from the firewall and uninstalled the program with rpm -e pcns and i go back through the browser powerchute is still asking for a password and user id, but i thought i uninstalled it? Any one know whats going on?
2. How can i change the password for powerchute on the esx server? I have no idea how to do that..

thats the thing, you will need to figure the timing on that unfortunately. with powerchute network shutdown, it gets the signal to shutdown from the network management card that you need to have installed on your UPS. so on both - the powerchute and the management card, you can set certain delays. for example, you can have one of the virtual machines shutdown after the UPS has been on battery for 5 minutes (or other types of events too).
so you will have to stagger them by having them shutdown based on certain events so that they all dont shutdown when the UPS runs out of battery and run out of time.

this will shutdown the bare metal VMWare ESX server itself. if you want to shut down the virtual machines, you will have to install powerchute network shutdown invidually on those virtual machine operating systems.

you want to make sure that you stopkill the service completely then uninstall. so, i'd recommend listing all the running services and finding the ID to kill.
there is no way to reset the password. you'd have to completely uninstall/reinstall the software and install it with a new password.
since you said you did "rpm -e pcns" you must be talking about powerchute network shutdown, rather than powerchute business edition. worst case, if you still cant get it to uninstall, we should be able to get you some manual uninstall instructions for you if we need to go that route.

Thank you for your responce, the problem is that i do not see any services running, yet i can still open http://servername:3052
I cannot see anything that looks like apc or powerchute that is running. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I did get some information from apc directly to uninstall the software and after following the documentation i did not find any trace of the software.

do you have any case/incident numbers from APC so I can look it up to see what directions were provided? I dont want to have them posted on the forum but i want to make sure that you received the correct instructions.
silly question but there is no chance that you are opening up the wrong server name on the link, is there?

I just did a netstat -tulpn and found that port 3052 was JAVA, once i killed that PID i cannot open the http:\\myserver:3052 with is the powerchute web page. However this doesnt answer why it comes up anyways even after uninstalling the software.
And yes i am actually on the esx server, i checked it over and over just to make sure i was on it, this was baffeling to me as well as i thought i was on the wrong server but i am not i know i am on the right server.
What i wonder is why it still pops up a web page for powerchute on http:\\myserver:3052.

ok-
i found those instructions you were sent which should be ok.
the top part just deals with powerchute business edition. you should have started from mid-way down the instructions which starts:
If you are removing PCNS from any Linux or Suse System...
also, PCNS uses java so it makes sense it was a java process. to me, it just seems like we missed something while uninstalling.
just to clarify - after looking up your case, i cant determine whether you installed PCNS 2.2.1 or 2.2.3. I see you were provided the link to 2.2.1. regardless, ESX is on the compatibility chart for PCNS 2.2.3 so that should work when we figure this out - but what version did you install that is stuck on there?

Can youtell me then how does the ESX server know when to actually power down? If there are 20 Vm's and they take different times to shut down, how does the ESX box know that all the VM's are down properly then its ok to shut down the ESX server itself?
