We have an HP ML150 G6 running Server 2008 x64 Standard (not R2), and a brand new APC Smart-UPS 1000 hooked up via USB.
Tried installing PowerChute Business Edition 9.0.1 but it hangs on the Agent install during the "Checking for UPS on COM1". It will stay there forever.
If I don't have PowerChute automatically search for installed UPS, I can select USB or Serial and PowerChute finds the device - but won't let me apply the configuration profile to it.
I have tried using the Serial cable - no change.
Any ideas?

Let us try to do it this way.
After uninstalling the driver unplug the cable and wait for 2~3 minutes before reconnecting the cable. If that doesn't work, it is worth to check as well on trying the same setup on a different PC.

Let us check if the UPS is detected by your PC. Kindly open up Device Manager and see if you'll have an entry that says APC UPS or HID UPS. Also make sure that the USB cable is directly connected to a USB port on your PC and not on a USB hub.

Yes, Device Manager says APC UPS. It is plugged directly into the back of the motherboard.

Is it under Human Interface Devices?
Can you try this please. Uninstall the APC UPS device from Device Manager. Unplug the USB cable and restart the PC prior to reconnecting the USB device.
