PowerChute Network Shutdown

I am having trouble with configuring PCNS with a network management Card on a Smart UPS 3000.

After installing PCNS and logging onto the user interface, i get the following event log:
+06/19/2008 12:07:17 PowerChute Network Shutdown version 2.2.1 started+

2 minutes later the following event log is created:
+06/19/2008 12:09:17 PowerChute cannot communicate with the Management Card+
Can anyone help me with this problem?

Hosam,

I would like to add some other points to the issue if you are still facing the issue.

I recommend you to install the latest PCNS version 2.2.3 software on your Windows 2003 and check if it helps. You can download the PCNS version 2.2.3 in the below link:
http://www.apc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCNS223&id=127&swfam=127

If you change the Authentication Phrase, you must also change it on the Web Management Card. Otherwise, PowerChute Network Shutdown and the Web Management Card will not be able to communicate. So, please make sure that the PCNS and the NMC Authentication Phrase are same.

Please let us know your findings on this issue.

Thanks agian for your recent reply. It was very helpful. However, I have checked the bidirectional traffic for ports 3052 and 80 and the are only allowing outbound traffic.

I am now having difficulty editing the access rule in ISA 2004. How can I edit that rule to allow bi-directional traffic?

Thanks again for your response!

Did the installation go through without any issue? Has this particular computer had PCNS working fully in the past?

Could you check to see if your computer's IP address is listed in the PowerChute section on the UPS' network card?

Also, are ports 3052 and 80 open for bi-directional TCP and UDP traffic? Are the UPS and the computer on the same network segment?

What operating system are you running PowerChute Network Shutdown on? It would help if you could provide a little more background on the computer, network and UPS.

Thanks for the reply!

In response to your questions:
- the install did go thru without issues.
- This computer has not had PCNS working in the past
- My server IP address is listed as a client on the UPS network card
- As far as ports 3052 and 80 being open for bi-directional traffic, I will look into that issue right away.
- The computer and ups are on the same network segment

The operating system I am running is Windows Small Business Server 2003
- Using ISA 2004
- Server is Dell PowerEdge 2950 storage server
- APC Smart-UPS 3000

When I get this unit working, I will install PCNS on 3 other servers running on the network.

I have read there was compatibility issues with PCNS and ISA 2004, is that correct?

Thank you for your reply...I will check the traffic on ports 3052 and 80.

Hey Deno,

I've seen this problem on systems that have multiple NIC's. Is that the case?

If so, make sure the NIC you are talking to PCNS is at the top of the binding order.

Also, I've seen cases where you need to disable all other NIC's, then install the software. Once communication is established, reenable the other NIC's a few minutes after.
