I have installed PCNS on several servers with no problem. On the last one I did, the installation process goes through normally, but it will not connect to the configuration page via the browser. I looked at the Windows services and found that the PowerChute Network Shutdown service is not even installed. I tried reinstalling again and it still does not show up. This server is running Server 2012. I have installed on other 2012 servers with no problem.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Is there a final solution for this issue?
I am currently on WS2012 with Java 7 Update 25 x64 installed and even if I create and start service manualy as described, web service is not working. Also I cannot see opened ports 3052 (HTTP) or 6547 (HTTPS) in netsat. Version of PCNS I am trying to install is 3.0.1 (latest one).
There is no change if I install private JRE included in installer.
So how should I proceed?
Thanks in advance.
Message was edited by: Patrik Solomanovski So it was solved when I changes Windows Server Language to English. Originally it was installed as Czech. So problem solved for me.

Dino,
Have you tried to uninstall Java 7, install PCNS using the built in / supplied Java, then reinstall java 7. Another option would be to switch the system to English, install PCNS, start the service (steps below), and then switch the system language back to German.

Yes, I can verify that it is Java 7 Update 21 that is causing the issue. I just setup a VM and installed Java 7.21, then installed PCNS-same problem, service is not installed. I then uninstalled PCNS and Java. Then I found and downloaded Java 7 Update 17, and then installed PCNS and it works fine.

Bill, thank you for posting this fix, I have just found the same problem on a 2012 install. This workaround fixed the install.
By the way, we are unhappy that Powerchute requires the insecure JRE installed on servers. Of course, the main vulnerability with JRE is when browsing compromised sites, and server users will not be doing that, but we are still unhappy to have the JRE dependency and we would like to add our voice to those requesting an alternative Powerchute application, with no Java dependency.

Hi Bill.
pcns.exe -install worked. I didn't had to change the language or uninstall Java.
APC Tech Support also suggested the same solution.
cu,
Dino

I can see a Java dependency itself being a problem. Is there security risk from PowerChute using a private JRE (and therefore no risky browser plugin)? Or a public JRE with the plugin uninstalled?

Hi,
Try running the installation in silent mode. This will create an error log that you can check to see why the installation is failing.
Info on installing in silent mode and the error codes can be found in the PCNS installation guide.

I just had the same thing happen on another installation. Service is not installed.
I really don't have time to screw with the silent install right now. Here is an idea, APC, how about make some software that works. It's 2013 for goodness sake, I shouldn't have to screw around with command-line silent installs just to get the software to work (or find out why it isn't working.) If the graphical installation is running into a problem, why can't it tell me instead of saying the the installation completed?

Sorry for your inconvenience. We have found an issue with PCNS not installing properly on some Windows systems that have Java 7 installed. Oracle made changes to Java 7.x that seems to cause issues with the installation. To resolve your issue uninstall Java 7, install PCNS 3.0.1, then reinstall Java 7.
To answer this question "If the graphical installation is running into a problem, why can't it tell me instead of saying the the installation completed?" Again, that is due to the changes in Java but if you look in the folder you were running the installer from you should see 2 files pcnsinst.log and error.log these files will list any errors that happen during the installation process.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

We have seen in the past few weeks that customer are reporting PCNS is not accessible on Windows systems after installation and when they check they see that PowerChute Network Shutdown Group 1 (PCNS1) service is not available. The issue is due to changes in Java version 7.0.110.21
We have found a better solution than the one I posted yesterday and have published Kbase FA170538
1. After the installation completes open a command prompt
2. CD to C:\Program Files\APC\PowerChute\group1 folder. (This is assuming the installation of PCNS was to the default path / folder.)
3. Run the command pcns.exe -install
4. Run the command net start pcns1
You only need to run the steps above once. From then on the service will start automatically and the web interface will be available.
