PowerChute Network Shutdown VMA 4.2 does not shut down guests machines

We've just finished configuring and attempted testing controlled shutdown of the guest machines on an esxi host.

It does not appear to be working for some reason.

We've configured the following conditions for the shutdown to occur.

1) On battery

2) Run time remaining is below threshold. (set to 3600 seconds)

* The UPS only has just over 1 hour run time remaining at its current load. (1 hr 9 min).

* When I tell the UPS to shut down powerchute clients, the host ends up just turning off without shutting down the guests (I suspect). However this tells me that the software is indeed working and connected to ESXi fine.

This is the log from the test case. (At 15:46:58 is when i pulled the power on the UPS to simulate an outage.)

12/12/2017 15:53:19 UPS critical event: RunTime Remaining: Below Threshold.
12/12/2017 15:53:19 The runtime remaining has dropped below the configured threshold while on Battery.
12/12/2017 15:52:49 UPS critical event: RunTime Remaining: Below Threshold resolved on Host 192.168.90.26.
12/12/2017 15:52:49 The runtime remaining back above configured threshold, or input power restored.
12/12/2017 15:52:19 UPS critical event: RunTime Remaining: Below Threshold.

12/12/2017 15:49:03 Shutting down Host 192.168.90.26.

12/12/2017 15:46:58 UPS has switched to battery power.
12/12/2017 15:39:48 Available runtime has been exceeded.
12/12/2017 15:39:20 PowerChute successfully opened TCP port 6547.
12/12/2017 15:39:20 PowerChute successfully opened TCP port 3052.
12/12/2017 15:39:20 PowerChute is attempting to open TCP port 3052.
12/12/2017 15:39:20 PowerChute is attempting to open TCP port 6547.
12/12/2017 15:39:19 PowerChute Network Shutdown version 4.2.0 monitoring started.
12/12/2017 15:39:18 Communication has been established.
12/12/2017 15:38:52 PowerChute successfully opened UDP port 3052.
12/12/2017 15:38:52 PowerChute is attempting to open UDP port 3052.
12/12/2017 15:16:14 Available runtime has been exceeded.

At no point did anything happen on the host or the guests at all. I left it for a solid 30 minutes but no changes. The UPS batteries just went down to 30 minutes remaining.

What could I have configured wrong?

Hi,

Is the host licensed? PCNS requires the host have one of these licenses Standard, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus

Hi,

PowerChute will tell the host that it needs to power down. The host tells the VMs to power down. See Schneider Electric FAQ FA159688

That statement is contradictory to the earlier statement. Does the host not power down or are the VMs not powering down. The PowerChute logs indicates the host is being powered down.

12/12/2017 15:48:58 Shutdown sequence started on Host 192.168.90.26 in response to UPS critical event: On Battery.

Hi Bill,

Those statements are indeed contradictory; they were two different test cases. (However upon reading what I posted I managed to make it clear as mud.)

To just test to see what would happen if i initiated a shutdown directly from the UPS, i logged into the UPS and initiated a shutdown, as per the following statement.

* When I tell the UPS to shut down powerchute clients, the host ends up just turning off without shutting down the guests (I suspect). However this tells me that the software is indeed working and connected to ESXi fine.

It did indeed work, although I'm fairly sure the guests did not shut down. (that itself would be a vmware issue as per your response).

The log that I posted however, was from testing via simulating loss of power to the UPS. (Pulling the cable).

The log does state that its shutting down the host but nothing happened for half an hour.
