PowerChute Network Shutdown (PCNS) Installation problem on windows

Hello,
I have a problem installing PCNS on Windows. I tried Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista.
I used the latest Version 2.2.4 of PCNS.

I try to install the software with options "single installation", "install for a single ups".
After entering all needed information, the software tries "Registering with Management Card(s)".
This happens very fast and i can see the client ip in the web interface of the management card.

The problem: After registering, the software trie "Verifying communication with Management Card(s)".
Here the installation process hangs. After a minute comes an error: "Cannot communicate with the Management Card".

I turned my firewall off and i have connected the client directly to the NMC to avoid a network error or something
blocking any port, but the error occurs again.

How can i install PCNS on Windows and establish a connection to the NMC?
Please help me.
Leuaner

Yes, I've disabled it and restarted the service.
I also turned of the avast! Antivirus service before a restart of PowerChute Network Shutdown Group 1.

Thanks.
Any ideas?

can you tell me what UPS model this is and what NMC firmware it is? I know its an AP9606 NMC so for the firmware on that, check under help, about on the web UI for the AP9606 and then in the AP9606, where you found the 603.I or whatever is where the UPS model will be - oh I see you said somethin about Smart UPS 1500 - is that SUA1500, a black tower model or rackmount?

another thing that sometimes causes issues is typos with the subnet masks, gateways, and network adapter binding order.

Yip tower model.
SUA1500I

subnet and gateway seem fine. Have checked on both ends.
How do you mean by network adapter binding order?

I'm also testing with VMware vMA and the pcns version for it.
Can see by the attached image pcnsOnvMAConfigurationWizardConnectionLog.png that the pcns is not receiving from the nmc.

Any ideas?

i didnt not realize you were using PCNS 3.0 which you originally stated 2.2.4. your case has been escalated internally at APC which I saw and unfortunately i believe that the AP9606 was mistakenly reported as supported by PCNS 3.0 when it isnt really (which we will update the documentation). thus, i think APC support will be posing to you a solution internally to remedy this.

I've had a similar problem.
nmc AP9606 with 601.3.I
pcns 2.2.4 currently on XP sp3 running under my admin account.
Firewall off, antivirus off.
Although firewall ports look fine.
See pcnsWinXpNoComms.png
Can't connect to nmc 192.168.0.70
See pcnsWinXpNoComms1.png
Have checkd user, passw and passphrase are all the same on nmc and pcns.
Have checked default gateway, netmast, DHCP server are all correct on both nmc and pcns.
When pcns is installed it adds it's IP to the nmc Smart-UPS 1500 -> PowerChute -> Configured IP Addresses, so there is obviously some form of communications occurring.
Can ping the pcns machine from the nmc using the pcns machine mane and the correct IP is returned. visa versa is also file.
Ideas?

have you tried to disable the firewall completely and restart the PCNS service, just as a test?

Hello Leuaner,

During the installation of PCNS it will ask you for a username, password and the authentication phrase. Would you happen to know if you have changed the authentication phase on the network management card? The default authentication phrase is admin user phrase. Can you re-type the phrase on the software installation and on the network management card? To change the phrase on the card you need to login to the card and click on UPS-PowerChute-Configuration.

Make sure as well that the PC and the NMC can see each other. Also, prior to changing the authentication phrase it would help if you could check if you have other PCNS clients communicating on the same card. If you will change the authentication phrase on the card and you have clients listening to it, you'll loose communication with it.

Hello,

I solved the problem partially.
I have updated the management card to the last version v5.1.3 and downloaded th e latest
PCNS v2.2.4. Now i can establish a connection from my Windows server 2008 computers
with firewalls turned off.
With my Windows 7 desktop pc i only get a connection if i turned my anti virus software
"trend micro office scan" off. The firewall is turned off too.

I only need the PCNS for my 2008 servers, so i didn't make more tries with my pc.

Thank you
