PCPE won't install

I have a new installation of W7 Pro 64 bit and neither v2 nor v3 of PCPE will install.
In both cases, it gets as far as the installation directory screen then nothing happens when you press 'Next'.

I can see by Googling that I'm not the only person with this problem but the only suggested solution - re-registering vbscript.dll - didn't work for me.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve

I recently bought an XPS 8500 Windows 7 PC from Dell. After several
days of building the system, I tried to install the APC PowerChute
Personal Edition (PCPE) 3.0.2 program to manage my UPS. The PCPE
install would not proceed beyond the Destination Folder window --
clicking Next in that window would cause the Next button to flash, but
nothing else would happen. I then had to cancel the PCPE install; the
cancellation took place normally.

A google search on PCPE problems showed others had seen a similar
problem, but the suggested solutions (e.g., re-registering vbscript.dll)
did not work for me. I had used TeraByte Unlimited's BootIt Bare Metal
to partition the disk on the PC and to do frequent backups to an
external drive as I built my new system. To narrow down the PCPE
install problem, I restored a very early backup to a test partition.
This backup was essentially the bare Windows 7 system plus some other
programs Dell had pre-installed. I had completed the Windows
installation on first boot by supplying my user name, password, etc. I
had installed no programs myself before making the backup. So this test
environment was about as close to the start as I could get.

First I tried installing PCPE on that bare system. It worked.
(Actually I cancelled that install after I had gotten beyond the
Destination Folder window where the PCPE install had failed previously.)
I then did the next step I always take with a new Dell system; I used
Control Panel "Programs and Features" to remove the McAfee
SecurityCenter 30-day trial program that Dell pre-installs. What I
would normally do right after that would be to install Norton Internet
Security. Instead, for this test I tried the PCPE install again. Now
it failed at the Destination Folder window, just as it did on my
production partition. As a final nail in the coffin, I ran a Windows
System Restore to reinstall the McAfee program (and whatever else its
uninstall had removed). Now the PCPE install worked again. So the
McAfee uninstall was breaking something that the PCPE install depended
on.

I notified Dell, but so far have received no response on this problem.
So I started googling again, e.g., for . It
turns out the removal of this trial program has caused problems for many
people. See the Red Dawn post in
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3522/p/19465957/20181898.aspx
The MCPR solution suggested there worked for me.

I did the following on a fresh test partition to which I had copied my
Windows 7 production partition. I downloaded MCPR.exe from
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe.
Long ago I had removed the McAfee program from the production partition
(and thus from this partition copy) via Control Panel "Programs and
Features"; you must do that removal before running MCPR. I next ran
Ccleaner, then turned off Norton Internet Security and World Community
Grid (BOINC); I had no desktop applications running. I then ran MCPR
from an administrator command window. MCPR did its thing. I restarted
Windows and ran the PCPE install. It fully installed PCPE with no
problems. After some testing, I repeated the above on my production
partition.

What made this problem hard to solve was that the McAfee uninstall was
done a number of days before the PCPE install problem was seen. Many
other changes were made in the interim as I was building the new system.
Relating the McAfee and PCPE events was not at all obvious. I hope this
helps some others. Jeff

can you try disabling UAC temporarily or run the program as an administrator, even though you might be an administrator?

we also have a kbase if it is error 2738 with the script thing you mentioned just to see if it says anything different from what you tried:

Running as admin doesn't help I'm afraid.
There are no error messages - it just stops responding.

install.txt attached.
As before, it gets as far as the destination folder selection. I pressed 'Next' twice (with nothing happening) and then saved the install.txt file before pressing cancel.
Thanks
Steve

I've been having the same problem: I can't install past the installation directory selection. Clicking "next" does not do anything.
I'm running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, with only Microsoft Security Essentials a/v.
I've attached the install.txt mentioned earlier in this thread.
I've also tried all the potential fixes in this thread, including re-registering the .dll and the McAfee uninstall program (even though I never had McAfee on this system).

hello - checked into this for you. let me know if these steps help:

• Check if Windows Script host engine is not registered to the OS. to fix this issue run the command wscript -regserver

(For info on Windows script host see http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/wsh_overview.mspx?mfr...)

• If step 1 fails then try registering the Scripting run time dll using the command regsvr32 c:\Windows\System32\scrrun,dll

Thanks for the response! No luck, unfortunately. When I run "wscript -regserver" nothing appears to happen. When I run "wscript" I get a pop-up window with "Windows Script Host Settings". When I run "regsvr32 c:\Windows\System32\scrrun32.dll" I get the error message "LoadLibrary (c:\Windows\System32\scrrun32.dll) failed - The specified module could not be found."
No change with the installation attempt. It still stops when "Next" is clicked.
Is there an older version of PCPE that might work instead?

I have the same bug, unable to install power chute personal edition. Stopped at the install location, nothing happened.

When I read the Jeff solution, I remembered in the pass I have installed McAfee then removed it from my computer.

I try the Jeff solution and after I removed completely McAfee with the following tools. I was able to install Power Chute personal edition 3.02 on my Windows 7 64 bits after that.

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe.

Thanks Jeff your the best 😉

Eric
