PCBE v9.0 - Application Shutdown (Exchange, SQL) on SBS 2003

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/17/2011

Hello,

According to various APC resources, my understanding was that v9.0 of PowerChute Business Edition overtly supported Application Shutdown of server components such as Exchange, SQL, etc. For instance, look at the following ...

and

[http://emea-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11145//supported-versions-of-software-powerchute-busi...http://emea-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11145//supported-versions-of-software-powerchute-business-edition-9.0-can-shutdown-in]

Yet, I cannot seem to find any reference to Exchange, SQL, or Application Shutdown within the PCBE web interface. (Note that we have only installed the v9.0 PCBE Agent on the SBS 2003 server box. Our needs are very simple - we don't require all of the multi-node management features provided by the PCBE Server and Console components. I always subscribe to the "Keep It Simple" approach. ;-))

Is it that the Application Shutdown is accomplished via Command Files? In which case, that's really no different to v8.x - yet in the following document, it suggests that the Application Shutdown is a feature/benefit when upgrading to v9.0, which is not available in v8.x:

Or, am I missing something - in which case, where do I find the Exchange and SQL shutdown settings in the v9.0 interface?

Thanks!

Brant

i believe that PCBE looks for the services of exchange, SQL, etc to be registered in the Control Panel->Administrative Tools ->Services section in order to be selectable on the PCBE console to utilize.

Hi,

Ah ... thanks for that thought.

If that is the case, then this suggests that the PCBE Server (and perhaps the Console?) must be installed on the SBS server box itself. Not necessarily a good plan, in terms of trying to keep things as simple as possible. SBS is already "complicated enough" :-), without having to add all kinds of 3rd party elements.

I'm certainly not saying that you're wrong (so please don't take any offence :D) - but, it would be nice to get a second opinion, before trying to decide whether it is worth the "risk" of adding these additional components to the SBS box ... or if we will leave well enough alone, and simply rely on an overall shutdown (just like doing a Start -> Shutdown) ... or, developing a command/script to explicitly shut down services. As I see it, those are really the only 3 possibilities.

Does anyone else have first-hand experience with Exchange and SQL shutdown features within PowerChute BE? (i.e. to confirm that the Server and/or Console must be installed - on the box? - in order to "expose" these features)?

Cheers!

Brant
