I've owned many APC UPS SUA/SMT units, including RM2U units. So I'm pretty familiar with how they're supposed to operate and sound - while on power and while on battery. All units are used in my home and not commercial/enterprise environments.
In 09/14 I purchased a new SMT2200RM2U from Amazon. This is not my first RM2U unit. Up until recently the SMT2200RM2U has been working great - while powered, while on battery and during a self test. However, recently it has been making some very odd noises. Once it awhile it will generate a noise for a few minutes that sounds like a box of rocks being shaken about. I imagine that it's occurring during a self test. None of my other units, including my SMT2200 tower, make anything remotely close to this sound.
Who do I need to contact about this matter?
Thank you.

All I can figure is that it would be a noisy fan, with a bad bearing.
I'd recommend contacting APC technical support, using whatever telephone number is appropriate for your part of the world. (After you've chosen a region, the APC web site will give you specific information.) In the United States and as of this writing in 2016, you could reach them at 800-555-2725.
