No power to/from SURT5000XLI

We've just had a pair of these units hard wired to the main supply. Before that they were sitting idle - exactly how long I couldn't say, but my guess is that it was a very long time, as the batteries appear completely dead. No sign of life anywhere. Pressing and holding the power button does nothing.
Power to the unit has been tested and verified.

This prompts two questions:
1. Is it not possible to power up these units on bypass, even if the batteries are shot?
2. Is there any way to test the circuitry of the device before I shell out $1000 on new batteries and find the devices themselves are dead.

Many thanks for the advice (and warning). In an effort to stay unfried, I have made arrangement for replacement batteries. Safest all round 🙂

Unfortunately, the unit does require good batteries to turn on. The only way that APC would support testing the system is to have you puchase new batteries. I see this quite often as units sit around for quite some time before being used in some circumstances.

Yes, it's possible, but this isn't something you should carry out on your own as it's extremely dangerous. In the US OSHA probably don't even allow untrained personnel to carry it out. Similar things probably apply in UK.

The SURT5000XLI is powered by RBC44, which consists of 16 12v 5Ah batteries connected in series with nominal voltage of 192v and operating voltage of around 220v DC. You'd need to apply around 200v DC with a DC power supply.

Find a UPS service/maintenance company. They should be able to come to your site and perform the test with a power supply,then after verifying the functionality, rebuild your batteries with 12v 5Ah batteries preserving your old hardware, take your old batteries and furnish the proper certificate showing lawful disposal of spent batteries.
