I just got my hands on 2 SUA1000RMI2U's with the network card in it. My goal eventually is to get it to talk on the network and setup VMs to shutdown from network communication with this ups.
I got an apc serial cable but i dont get a serial prompt. rebooting the ups and pressing keys, i get gibberish. Anybody have a trick to fix this so i can set the IP of the card??
-Or-
is there another way to set the nic ip besides via serial cable???

This is not a simple question to answer. You'll need to verify you have the specific APC serial cable cable, correct baud rate, and follow some other steps for your model of Network Management Card.
Once you validate that information, some of which is listed at the article below, you can use that article to help set up and configure TCP/IP settings on the Network Management Card in these units.

Another item not covered there, might be that you need to reset your UPS to get the serial port to work. You could to that first just to avoid having to do it after everything is set up. To do it, turn off anything connected to the UPS and turn off the UPS itself. Remove any serial or USB cables. Unplug the UPS from the wall/AC power. For this model, then hold down the off button on the front that looks like (o) and hold it for several seconds until you hear the UPS click and possibly flash the LEDs on the front panel. This resets the serial communication bus which gets "killed" if USB cables were ever connected. This could also be a roadblock to getting the serial connection to work if everything else checks out.
