Multiple Servers Shutdown With Symmetra

Hi Threre,

Our data cetntre is having two identical Symmetra LX UPS(SYAF16KRMI) with
two different mains input sources. All servers connected to the UPS has built-in main/reduntant
power supply units. Main power supply units of all servers are connected to one UPS and the
redundant power supply units of same servers are connected to the other UPS.
Powerchute network shutdwn is used in all servers. As per the current setup servers will start shutdown
even if mains failure is happening in one of the UPS.

We would like to know about a shutdown method wherein servers will shutdown only when both UPS are
on battery or low battery due to mains failure. Is there anyway to achieve this goal?

Awaiting your feedback,

Sajith.

I'm not a PCNS expert but I don't believe its possible to point a server to two UPS and have it shut down when both UPS batteries are drained. I'll let our PCNS experts give you a positive answer on this. However something to think about:

You have apparently gone some lengths to ensure that your equipment never has an interuption by providing two utility sources and providing 2N backup power to the servers. Typically providing 2 sources of UPS power to a server is for redundancy during an equipment failure and not for prolonged runtime on battery. Saying that I would keep my servers setup to shutdown when the the UPS that powers the Primary power supply reaches its low battery point which you have determined gives your equipment enough time to shutdown.

upsguy is right. when you install PCNS, you can install it to point to the IP address of each symmetra. the PCNS clients will then only shutdown when both UPSs batteries are drained.

[these instructions may assist you as well with the install|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/PMAR-7X3DAR_R0_EN.zip]
