Modbus on SMX 3000 HV

Hi,

We have several SMX3000HV and we'd like to enable Modbus on them. According to Application Note #176 we'd need fw > 10.0 but all of them came with fw 7.4 and we couldn't find newer releases.

How can we upgrade fw in order to enable Modbus capability?

Hi Ricardo,

Can you find your UPS ID? Perhaps from the front panel LCD or via PowerChute or a Network Management Card. It would be something like ID 1003.

From what I see, this UPS does not support Modbus yet as far as what is explained in the application note (via USB or serial port on the UPS) though assuming the ID is 1003. Support may be in progress as the latest firmware I see is the 7.4 you have already.

But, AP9635 UPS Network Management Card 2 is going to be supporting Modbus in the very near future and would work with your UPS. A formal announcement is coming soon but you'll be able to do Modbus TCP or Modbus 485/RTU in your Smart-UPS with this Network Management Card card. Technically, you can purchase this today and get it working but the documentation is not finalized. Smart-UPS have historically only worked with AP9630/31 management cards so there is work in progress to update documentation to say AP9635 is supported. I'd recommend looking into this as the quickest option to get Modbus with your UPS. You'd purchase this card and then download firmware v6.4.0 for Smart-UPS and you'll see Modbus TCP and Modbus serial options to configure after loading this firmware.

Hi Ricardo - just an update. I learned that the tentative release for Modbus on the UPS firmware (for USB or serial connection Modbus) would be this summer - so somewhere in June/July/August of this year.

In summary, you could purchase a AP9635 Management Card now for immediate Modbus support or upgrade the UPS firmware mid-2016 to get the functionality though UPS firmware upgrade for free and by USB or serial connections.
