Missing Application module sumx bin file on AP9630

I am trying to get an older UPS working again. I can connect to it via SSH, but HTTP and HTTPS are not working.   I see that it is missing the Application Module bin file (aka apc_hw05_sumx_###.bin) and has the error:

Application Module
---------------
Invalid Module Header!

I dont have a v6.5.6 SUMX bin file but I do have the newest v7.1.2 and the Update Utility.  When I use the utility to try and update the UPS it gives an error and cannot update it.

CLI OUTPUT:

If you can SSH to the device then you should be able to turn on FTP. If you can you can update the device manually though FTP. I have done this many times when the update utility fails to upload one file or the other for some reason.

But a note that you only need to upload two files the AOS and SUMX files from the upgrade utility. You will need to upload the AOS then the SUMX in that order as if you upload the SUMX file first usually the AOS will delete the SUMX file when it is uploaded.

If you want to try here are the steps.

1. Start a constant ping to the device buy opening a CMD session and typing ping <the device IP> -t T This will come in handy later.

2. FTP to the device

3. Log in as an admin usually APC and what ever password you set up for that account

4. Once logged in type "bin" (no quotation marks) and hit enter

5. Then type "put C:\test\apc_hw05_aos_712.bin (Replace c:\test\ with the full path to the apc_hw05_aos_712.bin file

6. Once the upload is complete the unit will reboot. You can watch the CMD window to see when pings resume and know that the device is back online.

7. repeat steps 1 - 5 again except this time at step #5 type in "put C:\test\apc_hw05_sumx_712.bin (Replace c:\test\ with the full path to the apc_hw05_sumx_712.bin file

8. The UPS will reboot again, and again you can watch the ping window to see when it comes back on line.

9. If both files uploaded completely you should be able to log in using the web interface and it should preform as normal.

Thank you for the suggestions. Sorry for the late reply. Things have slowed and I got back to this.

I manually uploaded the new files to the UPS. It appears it now boots seven (7) times in a row after the final SUMX file upload. When I hit the webpage it shows an error:

The Application Is Incompatible With This APC OS

You are attempting to access a Schneider device.
The application you are trying to load is incompatible with the current APC OS. Please verify the correct firmware is loaded.

The files look good to me??  CLI output below:

Also, the update utility throws up this error:

Firmware distribution does not match target device platform; this could be due to a corrupt distribution.

If this is the case, what file + platform check(s) should I make?

What is the device ID/Model number you have the card in?

It kind of sounds like either something in the upload got corrupted, it is a symmetra device, the card or port is bad, or the UPS itself is defective.

Sorry I should have specified I mean what is the ID/Model the UPS or device the card is in. APC makes different model UPSs. The symmetra UPSs can not be read from a NMC without the right firmware on them and vice versa.

So you can not take a AP9630 out of a symmetra UPS and put in say a SRT1500XLA and vice versa. The symmetra firmware has a "SY" notation in the firmware name and the others do not.

The other member was asking what model APC UPS is this AP9630 NMC-2 being installed on. Also, on a related note it's highly recommended to upgrade in increments. Even though the APC FAQ does not call this out anywhere never mind insists its impossible to brick the NMC-2!

When in fact it is possible to brick the NMC-2 because the Interwebs have proven it so . . .

Regardless, the interim staged upgrade path would have been from 7.0.4 -> 7.0.8 -> 7.1.2 especially if you came from a 6.X.X firmware branch.

@Teken   I searched around a bit and can only find the most current Wizard and software version.  Where could I find older versions to follow a more gradual upgrade path (e.g., 7.0.4 -> 7.0.8 -> 7.1.2)?  Forgive me if I am missing something obvious.

You can use APC’s online technical support (chat) to request those previous files. You’ll want to insure all the model and serial numbers are on hand to provide them so you receive the correct ones. Regardless, I would follow up by requesting assistance in solving why the NMC isn’t updating correctly first.

Support may very well offer assistance in factory resetting the NMC as a break fix. Than you may upgrade in a staged manner to 7.1.2 firmware.

To be clear you do in fact have a AP9630 NMC Inserted into the (Smart Card) slot, correct?? I hope you’re not trying to update the firmware on the Smart Connect (Green RJ45) port??

The embedded (Green RJ45) port is to connect to APC Smart Connect (Cloud Only) subscription based portal service. There is NO local access or control using this port once the subscription has lapsed.

Please confirm you are trying to update the (ADD IN) AP9630 NMC (Network Management Card) that slides into the UPS on the back left of the UPS housing.

Thank you. You appear to have the right firmware but may have gotten a corrupted download. I have attached the 6.5.0 and a fresh download of the 7.1.0 version for that UPS and card

In addition if you try the 6.5.0 version you will have to use FTP and do the AOS file then the SUMx file. Otherwise the AOS upload will wipe out the SUMX
