Matrix 5000 faulty battery alert comes and goes constantly in new smartcell.

It turns out that after a night of charging, a new set of smartcells, I ran a calibration with 46% (normal) and the UPS operates like new!

However, 12 hours later I now get...

06/01/2013     11:46:52     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:46:37     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

06/01/2013     11:23:41     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:23:25     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

06/01/2013     11:20:52     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:20:36     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

06/01/2013     11:17:31     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:17:16     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

06/01/2013     11:12:09     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:11:53     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

06/01/2013     11:07:45     UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists.

06/01/2013     11:07:29     UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

SOLUTION FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY OH WHY didn't I CHECK THE BATTERY COMMUNICATION CABLES?!?!?!?!?!

That was the situation.

I opened a new bag of them and replaced them - the problem vanished.

I suspect this is what cause a thermal runaway condition that melted the batteries before somehow too.

SO PLEASE REPLACE THOSE OLD COMM CABLES IF YOU GET THIS!

Hi, when you acquired these smartcells as "rebuilt", did the seller mention whether he/she had cleared the flash memory (reset) the smartcell's built in intelligence/communications card ? If they didn't do that, you will never get a healthy cell indication from the matrix for that module.

It is now 2016...

I know that this is a few years later, but these APC Matrix units are still doing well at client sites.
So IK wanted to close the door on this issue and now am trying to diagnose what actually happened here.

Is there a set of tests I can run to validate that the Matrix 5000 unit in this thread is not going to kill another set of cells?

Some voltage / charger / inverter tests i can perform?
