Hello All!
In our rack we have several servers and a single UPS, this is a hypothetical configuration.
How can we configure.....or get........the UPS to only respond to a "Shutdown UPS after shutdown" from a single designated machine.
Example, say that we have five physical machines running several hundred virtual machines. As we add and remove machines, it would be very easy to forget to uncheck the "Shutdown UPS after shutdown" which could cause a single virtual machine to drop several hundred machines.
What is the best way to prevent this....it would be nice if I could get the UPS to only recognize a designated machine as the authoritative machine. Can ISX Manager help.

If this is something that must be accomplished, and must not rely on one of a hundred techs to remember special conditions such as who is the last man standing box and remember you must always uncheck the box at install........do I have some creative alternatives here, alternate control processes or products that I can purchase to assist.
Ideas...modified APC firmware that can never be shut down remotely.....modified APC installer software that does not have that check box checked by default......third party monitoring software.......a router in the middle that eats the shut down packet unless initiated by a specific IP address.....????........do I have any options, even creative options or options that cost money.....?
thanks

Unless you have a configured event to shutdown in the PCNS interface, the PCNS client is set to shutdown when the UPS has reached low battery signal time. Therefore, if you leave it like that, all of your servers/workstations will shutdown when the UPS has reached its low battery signal time. In essence, you're letting the UPS run on battery for as long as possible, not doing a sequenced shutdown, and not powering off the UPS after the shutdowns have completed.

Hello,
You can always perform a silent installation. Install PCNS on a machine, configure it as you please, in this case make sure that the checkbox to shutdown UPS is unchecked. Doing it this way will allow you to install PCNS on multiple computers with the same configuration.
More information can be found at:

Please note that this is not a MASS software installation. These instructions will not push the PCNS clients to your machines. It will simply allow you to install the PCNS client with the same configuration on multiple machines. Please read the document carefully.

I saw that you mentioned virtual machine. You don't need to install PCNS on all the virtual machines, only on the ESX server itself. When you shutdown the physical box, it will gracefully shutdown the virtual machines.

Is this an installation on an ESX server? If so, there is no need to install the software on all of the virtual machines. If you set it up to shutdown the ESX server, the ESX server will shutdown client operating systems. Here is kbase doc:

Thanks for the replies.....yest this is an ESX setup, along with many physical servers.
I was not aware of the new integration with ESX, so I will look further in to that.
Still, on the physical side of things, I am guessing that their is no way to designate a master or authoritative computer to control the shut down of the UPS.....that the UPS will take the shut down command from any registered client. Is that about right?
Thanks for the input,
Kevin
