Issue with battery swap on SURT8000XLT with SURT192XLBP

We have 2 SURT8000XLT and each have 1 SURT192XLBP.

Each can have 4 batteries so 8 per setup. We had 8 new batteries with the intention of putting 4 new ones in and leaving the old ones for the time being.

We initially swapped the batteries in the bottom/SURT192XLBP and pressed Self test and still had an error led.

We then swapped the new batteries to the top row in the SURT8000XLT and put the old batteries back into the SURT192XLBP. Upon pressing self test here it looks like it disabled the street power as it started to make error sounds and then the equipment connected powered down. 

We tried putting in all the old batteries, no success. We then put in all the new batteries and then it came up.

Can we not have a mix of new and old? Would we be able to disconnect the SURT192XLBP on each and then split the new batteries 4 for each?

The only documentation I could find said they were hot swappable and as seen there were no repercussions in the initial placement in the bottom row, yet when tried in the top it errored out.

We do not recommend mixing new and old battery.  Mixing and matching old and new batteries can result in swelling and venting of the older batteries in the system.  

If you are not going to replace all of the batteries then you should put all the new batteries in the Smart-UPS and leave the older ones in the external battery pack or remove the external battery pack until you can replace them as well.
