Techie,
finally I could reset the password using Putty and following the instructions you gave me. Now using the APC Device Configuration Wizard I can set the ip address ...
I check the option 'Web browse to device'
Login screen appears
I use the user and pass I set using serial cable.
Login... transmitting ... Rebooting Management Card... Please Wait ... Continue...

but then IE fails to open the webpage... I can ping the IP address but I cannot connect to the web interface.

I am getting mad with this problem...

Thanks a lot.
Jose

Hi again Techie,

I got the same problem in other APC 1500 but this time your instructions dont work as expected.
I kept ppressed the reset button for 5 secs, then start blinking and pressed it again and go off. In theory the user and pass should be reset already but I execute the APC Device IP Configuration tool and apc/apc dont work and the system keeps asking for user and pass...

one thing is I dont get any message using putty or hyperterminal... it seems to connect but I press RETURN and nothing appears...

any idea?

thanks!
Jose

Hello Jose,

What kind of network management card are you using now? Is it network management card 1 or 2? Here is an APC Kbase Article that might be able to help you out -> [APC Password Reset Procedure for Network Management Card|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7879/kw/password%20reset]

Hi Jose,

Are you getting any error message when you are trying to access the Power Chute Business Edition Software's web interface? Is the PBE Agent service running in backend service? To check this..Start-->Control Panel-->Services-->APC PBE Agent. Make sure that the PCBE agent is started and set to Automatic. And also please be sure that you are using the latest Power Chute Business Ediition version which supports your OS.

Secondly, please try accessing the PCBE agent web interface on any workstation which is connected to the network. In order to do this, type the following URL on your Workstation browser, http://the appropriate IP address of the Computer which is running the PCBE agent:3052.

The agent service operates on port 3052. You need to have java installed for this to work. You should get a username and password prompt in order to login to the PCBE agent web interface. Please enter the login credentials that you set while installing the PCBE agent software.

Please let me know if you have any question.

Have a nice day!

Hi Tichie,

thanks a lot for your fast reply but still I cannot connect.
By the time I set up that UPS, I remember I check the compulsory SSL access. By the way I dont use any port number at all , the standard port 80.
Then I receive the following error

Protected Object.
This object on the APC Management Web Server is protected and requires a secure socket connection.
Click here to use a secure connection.

so I click and I go to https://172.18.169.19/logon.htm

then I try with the user admin y add during the installation and doesnt work.
In the guide I have, the default user should be apc/apc and then you have to change this. that is what I did I remember but I lost the credentials I created in that time.
I found this in google, could you confirm it is possible to reset the device following these steps?
-turn off the attached equipment on the UPS and unplug it.
-remove the communication cable from the UPS
-turn off the UPS and unplug it from the wall.
-hold down the off (o) button on the UPS for 3-5 seconds until you hear an audible click and see the LEDs flash.

Cheers!
Jose

Jose,

The Steps what you found is called as Brain dead. Please note that the Brain dead will not reset the Management Software user name and password. If you forgotten the login credentials of the PCBE software, you will need to re-install the PCBE software. I recommend you to install the latest PCBE software on your Computer. You can download the latest PCBE software here. You will be able to set the user name and password as apc while installing the PCBE software. You will need to uninstall the older version prior to installing the latest version.

Please provide the following details in case if you are facing the issue even after installing the latest version.

Model number of the UPS? You can find the UPS exact model number on a white bar code sticker at the rear of the unit. Could you please confirm me the version of the Power Chute software which is being used? May I know the Operating System of the Computer? Could you please confirm me the serial cable part number? You can find the serial cable part number on the connector itself. If possible, screen shot of the error message.

Hi again,

sorry I didnt explain myself clearly. The agent is working fine, in any case, I upgraded it till 8.01 and looks ok.
My problem is when I want to connect to the UPS network adapter directly. Then I get a different login screen and the agent user and pass are not valid.

After the installation of 'APC Device IP configuration 3.0.1', the user by default is apc/apc . this is the configuration I am trying to reset.
my UPS information is

UPS Model Smart-UPS 1500 RM
Firmware Revision 667.18.I
Manufacture Date November 6, 2008
Serial Number AS0845131295

Now this software shows me an error 'unable to open communication port' when I am trying to change the IP address for example. During the agent installation didnt have any problem at all to find the device using serial cable (model 940-0024C).

The system is W2003 R2.
Thanks a lot
Jose

PS: I just moved the cable to the Serial port 1( before was in the port 2) and the "APC Device IP configuration Wizard" can connect and tries with the user apc/apc but obviously cannot connect, I changed the pass for the apc user and this is exactly what i need to restore. Today I saw a reset small button next to the network socket (similar to the ones in routers), should I press that one? can I do it with computers connected and working? this will only reset the network interface or will interrupt the power suply?

Jose,

APC IP configuration wizard is used to assign an IP address to a un configured Network Management Card. You do not need to use the IP configuration wizard to reset the Network Management Card login credentials.

Do you have APC Network Management Card installed into the UPS smart slot? If so, did you already configure an IP address to the card?

Please follow the [K-base document|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7879] instructions to reset the NMC card user name and password to apc.

Secondly, you do not need to use the PCBE software if you want to use the Network Management Card to monitor the UPS.

Please let me know if you have any question.

Another update..APC Power Chute Network Shutdown can be used to shutdown your Servers gracefully in the event power failure. APC PCNS software works in conjunction with Network Management Card.

Jose,

I will be happy to help you to fix the issue. Could you please try accessing the NMC through telnet and see if it works?

Thanks for the reply.  Here is the process that I am referencing:  http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156075/

Step 6 says to press the reset button once and the lights will start to flash.  (My lights are cycling yellow/green constantly even without pushing the reset).  It then says that pushing reset again will cause the light to go out.  (This does happen.)

After doing this I keep hitting enter until the username prompt is displayed.  The manual for the SURTA300XL-BR says when initially setting up the terminal connection: a. Press Enter to initiate terminal mode. Follow the prompts. b. Press 1 to modify UPS settings.  There is no mention of a specific username or password.  However, pressing enter just reprompts for a username.  If I try apo for username and apo for password I am again prompted for the username.

I'm just not sure what I'm missing.  I've tried apo/blank, apc/apc, apc/blank, admin/blank, administrator/blank.  I am going to try later to totally power down the unit and see if it makes any difference with a fresh attempt and also try a few more passwords.
