How to install NMC2 (AP9631) in Symmetra PX 48kW All-in-one UPS

I've recently acquired and Network Management Card 2 and I want to install it in a Symmetra PX. I acquired this card because 1) I want to use the external temperature sensor 2) I want to connect it to the dry contact I/O accessory to connect it to my 3rd party environment monitoring system. The UPS already pre-installed with a network management interface (the one with the RJ45 for LAN connection, DB-9 connector and RJ45 connection for the LCD display) located on the top slot of the left column (3 vertical slots available). I've installed the AP9631 on the top slot and middle slot of the right column and can access the NMC2 and assign the IP address. However, an error came up "lost the local network management interface to ups communication" and I can get no other parameter readings (i.e. temp, voltage, etc). This appear on both the preinstalled network interface card and the NMC2. When I took out the NMC2, the pre-installed card connection to the UPS is restored. Any ideas of how to get it to work? Do i need to upgrade / downgrade the NMC2 firmware?

This is the NMC2 details:

sure - in FA156047 that i mentioned, use the manual FTP instructions for NMC2 and it will allow you to do it.

Hi there,

My NMC2 firmware is already v5.1.6, when I tried to upgrade using the sy3p514 firmware, the utility produces an error saying downgrading AOS is not allowed? any clues to overcome this issue?

I don't know whether multiple management cards are supported in the Symmetra PX - that's outside my experience as an end user.

However, I do see that your AP9631 has the "sumx" application module (for Smart-UPS and Matrix models). I believe the application module you need is "sy3p" for the Symmetra PX ("sy" for other Symmetra models). You'll need to update the firmware on the AP9631 for it to understand the Symmetra. Whether that will solve the issue with 2 management cards, I don't know - we'll have to wait for someone from APC to respond.

Edited to add: Upon looking at your picture, I see you have a number of blank filler covers missing. For optimal cooling, you want to install blanks wherever needed (this would include battery / power module slots as well as the management slots). This will also reduce any electrical interference (emitted or received). This has nothing to do with the issue you're having, but I thought I should mention it.

yes, terry is correct. you have the wrong application module installed on the card. you do need sy3p application for symmetra 3 phase. this can be solved with a simple firmware upgrade. just go to http://www.apc.com/tools/download/index.cfm and look for Firmware Upgrades - Network Management Card and look for the latest release of SFSY3P514 I believe it is.

instructions on updating firmware are located in our knowledge base (www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/) in article FA156047.

as far as the install order, take a look here: http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z5QFC_R1_EN.pdf

FYI - up to (2) NMC's may be installed into one UPS. the install order does matter when you have multiple accessories.
