How to disable self-test emails

Hi all,

Is it possible to disable self test 'passed' emails? I still want to self test every 2 weeks, just don't want the emails unless it fails. At the moment I get emails telling me everything passes, could do with knowing only when something fails.

I've many UPS's, both using powerchute connected directly to the end devices, and also the APC Management cards.

Cheers, Andy

There is another solution.  To disable a single alert, look at the HEX code at the bottom of your email or SMS alert and use it in your URL.  Web to UPS_IP/eventdtl.htm?code= ; so, let's say the UPS IP is 10.10.10.10 and the alert code is 0x0105 (UPS: Self-Test passed), you could probably web to the following for an option of disabling that alert:

http://10.10.10.10/eventdtl.htm?code=0x0105

Good Luck

Thank you for sharing your feedback as understanding how we can make the product better is certainly important to me and the team who works on it. I convey what I hear here and through other support channels directly to them and chat their ear off laughing

Using what is covered in knowledge base article ID FA156104 @ http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ should give you that granular control on each event on the system, which is represented by a unique event hex code ID. It also provides a warning/disclaimer on what disabling a self test passed event will do for when the self test does indeed fail one day and how you won't get the subsequent "clearing" event to tell you it passed after you address it.

I managed to solve this. To disable email notification for the particular email that is sending to a sms gateway but not to another email account, go to:

Administration Tab->Notification->By Event: Diagnostics

untick the email you do not wish to receive the alert for these 2 events:

  1. UPS: Started a self-test. [0x0137]
  2. UPS: Self-Test Failed [0x0106]

btw, if you can't login due to "Someone is currently logged into the APC Management Web Server", simply login thru telnet and exit.

Most systems allows notification ONLY if there are failure and will not sent any for all successful processes.

Also, we have subscribed to paid notification to multiple users for this and not only is this wasting our credit for non-critical notification, it also disturb those who are on standby during late hours for nothing.

Please provide an option to disable successful processes unless self-test failed. This is a bug.

I think this is a difference of opinion on if it is a bug or not. Some customers for auditing purposes and records would like to know when diagnostics are successful. And I think most users, after replacing a battery, would want to know if the subsequent self test passed. Either way, this is customizable in general to enable/disable individual events. You can follow the instructions here to disable the self test passed email and other specific events if you cannot find them on the notification list -> Configuring clearing events with APC Network Management Cards | FAQs | Schneider Electric US

As far as I can tell, there's a bug.
When you disable all "informational" emails, or go under the diagnostic messages, the "Started a self-test" email notification can be disabled. However, the "Passed a self-test" message appears nowhere in the list of messages, and turning off all informational mails doesn't turn it off either, although it claims to be informational in the email body.

Note that if you turn off informational messages, you can avoid notification, if it worked the way it's supposed to, of successful self-test events, and only get mails about failures.

its not a bug as far as i know. its a clearing event for the actual event of self test failed. if you view self test failed on the list, you'll see it listed there as the clearing event. there are only a certain handful of events that act like this since we want you to know when your UPS self test is passing or failing since it could be a critical situation if the battery is not replaced. that is why you have to go through these special instructions on disabling this even if you dont want to see it.

Gotcha... I think I follow the logic now. I don't quite agree with it, but can see the logic. Thanks!

for the APC network management cards, please refer to this knowledgebase -> http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8673

please be advised that while this is understandably annoying, there is also something you should be aware of. when your self test does fail one day, and you do indeed remedy the issue, you will not get an email telling you the self test has passed and then may question if it passed or not since you disabled the email notification.

just be aware of that but instructions are above for you for the APC Network Management Cards.

Good Luck
