I have a APC Smart UPS 1400 model: SU1400BX120, I have obtained a replacement battery already but want to know if I can hot swap the batteries.

yes, all smart UPS were designed to have hot swappable batteries. When you swap them, you'll get an expected indication that the batteries are disconnected and of course, during this time, you will have no battery back up when the batteries are removed.
