As mentioned in title, trying to determine which of my devices have NMC2 vs. NMC3 vs. NMC4 (I guess that's starting to be a thing?).
I did find this thread and that kinda confirms what I already knew: v3.x.x firmware is NMC1 and v6.x.x+ firmware is NMC2.
But. Can we assume that all vX.x.x.x firmware (i.e. 1.2.0.4, 2.2.1.1, 3.0.0.5, etc.) is NMC3?
There's got to be a better way to tell via software, right??

Login to the NMC -> About -> Network: This will tell you exactly what physical hardware is in place and the firmware installed.
NMC2 AP9630, 9631, 9635 are all End Of Life (EOL) and do not offer anymore firmware updates. The last firmware release is v7.1.2. The NMC2 can not be enrolled to the SNS Subscription Service as it is in maintenance mode. Any legacy subscriptions will lapse and the user must replace the NMC2 to a NMC3.
The NMC3 AP9640, 9641 has active support and development. There are two branches of firmware which support the APC Secure NMC (Subscription Based) firmware and none paid subscription.
The AP9640 / 9641 supports all three firmware branches such as NMC2 (v7.1.2).
NMC3 firmware 2.5.XX None SNS, and the paid subscription 3.X.X (SNS).
If you have NMC3 that were enrolled very early on to the SNS subscription service that had 1.X.X ~ 2.X.X firmware they will appear in the APC Web Portal. You can than update them all to the latest 3.X.X firmware to obtain the latest feature enhancements and security / bug fixes.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize NMC3 can run different branches of firmware... This is more confusing than one might hope.
Having said that, the bigger issue I have is with PDUs: when I look at a UPS, I can get the model number under About > Network and that tells me what the NMC is but on PDUs, I only get the model number of the PDU... Any way I can tell which "embedded" NMC is in a specific PDU (or PDU model)?

APC had a NMC Cross reference matrix chart outlining what card was inside of each hardware platform. You may consider reaching out to APC Technical Support to see if this document is still available for review and download.
If I find a copy I’ll upload it here for your review. 👍

This APC FAQ provides more details as it relates to (How To Determine) which embedded NMC is on board:
https://www.se.com/sa/en/faqs/FA285026/
Bullet Points: A blue webpage indicates a NMC 1. A green webpage indicates a NMC 2 / 3 / 4.
The (About) web page in the PDU NMC will confirm the firmware version. As such this affirms and indicates whether the NMC is a NMC 1 vs NMC 2, 3, 4.
NOTE: Some PDU’s the NMC could be replaced from a NMC 1 to NMC 2. Also NMC 2 that were on 5.X.X firmware the webpage was BLUE until it was upgraded to 6.X.X firmware at which time it would change to the new GREEN webpage! 🤦♂️🤢
As such don’t take the colour as the final indicator vs the firmware level installed! ☝️
