If you have physical access to the unit, the NMC model number is part of the info found on the NMC faceplate. AP9617/8/9 are NMC1. AP9630/1/5 are NMC2. AP9606 and AP9605 are even older units.
If you don't have physical access to the unit but can access the management card via Telnet, SSH, or the web interface, firmware 2.x.y and 3.x.y are NMC1 while firmware 5.x.y and 6.x.y are NMC2 (x and y can be any digit).

If it is indeed a Smart-UPS X 3000 HV seen here -> http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Smart-UPS-X-3000VA-Rack-Tower-LCD-200-240V/P-SMX3000HV , which has an LCD screen, those are fairly new and only support NMC2.
If you go to the rear of the UPS and look at the installed NMC or even under the UPS LCD's About menu, it will show the model of the NMC which is likely AP9630 or AP9631. AP9635 is another NMC2 now compatible with this UPS but you would've had to specially purchase it and would've likely known.
