How to Wire a apc smart ups rt 6000va from split phase power (usa)
I have a apc smart ups rt 6000va. It takes single phase 200/208/220/240v power. I live in America, and I have 240 split phase (i.e. 120v circuits). Is it possible to connect this unit to my current power setup? I have seen a possible solution of feeding in the two 120v "hot" wires into it (using a two pole 30a breaker), but I know some equipment won't tolerate that. The manual doesn't really mention anything about how to wire it up. It uses the standard brown blue green input wires. Any input is appreciated, feel free to ask for clarification incase I wasn't clear. Thanks.

Hi Jacob. It looks like the unit you have is for outputting 208 or 240. The input wiring would be 2 hots and a ground only. You can certainly connect it using H,H,G in your setup, but you will not be able to get 120 on the output. Because these units are straight 208/240 input and output the inverter does not have any neutral to balance the voltage on the phases--it is creating a phase to phase voltage and therefore you cannot expect to get 120 volts per phase. You will need to use an isolation step-down transformer (SURT003) plugged into the UPS which will step the 240 volts down to 120. There are split phase units available, such as the SURTD6000RMXLP3U, which require a H,H,N,G input wiring and will provide both 208/240 and 120 without the need for a step-down transformer.
