I'm in the process of configuring UPS and PDU on the APC rack. I have several APC racks with aproximately 28 IBM blade Servers in the chasis/enclosure and several cisco devices on the rack. All equipment are connected to the PDU and PDU are plugged into the UPS Symmetra LX. All my IBM Blade Servers have PowerChute 2.2.1 installed. All ports on the PDU and APC Network Management Card have configure with specific IP addresses. I want to know how to graceful shutdown all my ibm blade server located int the chasis/enclosure during the power outage. However, within each chasis/enclusure, i have 14 blade server which included 2 Exchange 2007 server clusters and two Domain Controllers. What is the best solutions to shutdown all my servers properly during the power emergency outage/blackout.
If my chasis/enclusore shutdown, all my 14 blade servers will shutdown at the same time which I don't wanted it to do that. I wanted to have my DC to shutdown first, Exchange Servers (clusters) second, etc.,. Appreciated if anyone APC Experts out there that can help me out. Thanks!!! in advance.
I need to test the functionality of the shutdown processes to prove to my manager/boss that it works the way we need it to.
I am also interested in hearing about any "test scenarios" that others recommend for testing one's overall configuration.

Powerchute Network Shutdown allows you the ability to do shutdowns based on a timer, rather than just low battery.
If you go into the configure events section, you can set certain servers to shut down "X" number of seconds after the UPS goes to battery. You just have to stagger the shutdowns to your liking.
For testing shutdown, you can setup something non-critical like "Lost communication" to the UPS and simply pull the network cable.
Always make sure any servers that are shutting down first do NOT have the box checked to "turn off the UPS when shutdown finnishes". This is under the shutdown settings of Powerchute Network Shutdown.
