Help with old Smart-UPS XLM

Hello,
I hope someone here can help me. I have recently started helping a local school with their IT needs. They have an old Smart-UPS XLM (SUM1500RMXL2U) connected to a HP DL380G6 running Windows Server 2003. I believe the server and the UPS were bought at auction by one of the previous IT people.
The UPS could only hold a 40% charge so I replaced the battery module with a new one. When I installed it I noticed there was no cable from the UPS to the server. I checked the server and it does not have any APC software and the server default UPS setup is turned off.
I have several USB cables from other APC UPSs (Back-UPS if I remember correctly) but I do not have the software to run on server 2003. I tried going to the downloads and found several possible matches but the download pages did not seem to work and I'm not sure if the USB cable would even work. I understand that it uses a special serial cable if I want to connect that way.
The only manuals I have found online are for a newer version of the UPS (differnt frontpanel and backpanel).
Can anyone tell me where I can get the software, or a serial cable (and part number) to use the default server software? Will the USB cable work? Which software do I need (I only need it to be able to signal the server for shutdown)?
Thanks,
Tom Harbin

Hi,

You have a few options with that model. The unit should have network management card AP9619 installed. You can configure the network card and then install PowerChute Network Shutdown on the Windows 2003 system. When the card reports the UPS is on battery or has low battery depending on how you configure PowerChute the system will be powered down. The most recent version of PowerChute Network Shutdown for Windows 2003 is version 3.1 and it can be downloaded from this site http://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/download/index.cfm?dl_method=display_archived

NOTE: The network will need to be protected by a UPS as well. If not there will be no communications between the card and system. PowerChute Network Shutdown does offer the ability to power the system down in the event of communications lose.

The other option is to connect the serial cable (part number 940-0024) to the system and install PowerChute Business Edition 9.2 or install APCUPSD.

Thanks Bill,

I had someone verify for me that it does have an AP9619 EM network card installed and I have downloaded the software. I will go over there tomorrow or the next day and try to connect it up although I have a suspicion that it probably has an old configuration and username/password stored on it. That may be why it wasn't connected. If I read the AP9619 quick start correctly, I believe I can fix that by buying the serial cable and use a terminal emulator to correct that. Did I read that correctly or am I out of luck if it does have an old configuration?

Thanks again.
