Help please - SmartUPS with Powerchute on Windows Server 2016 SNMP with Synology Diskstation

Hi everyone,

you guys are my last hope 😉

I use an APC SmartUps 1500 UPS with my Windows Server 2016 and a Synology Disktation.

As the UPS has only one USB cable, I plugged that into my Windows Server (as the Diskstation is only backup) and installed and configured the APC PowerChute Software that allows Windows to recognize the UPS and shutdown the server once the batteries goes low.

Now I want to use the SNMP-feature that Powerchute provides to inform my Diskstation to shut down as well.

So far I have had no luck on connecting my Diskstation to my server via SNMP.

What I did so far:

-Diskstation is logged into the Windows Domain

-Windows Firewall allows all in- and outgoing connections on port 161 UDP (used for SNMP)

-installed the SNMP service on the Windows Server

-configured both PowerChute and Diskstation for hours, see attached pic

All I want is for the Powerchute-Software to send a signal to my Synology to tell it to shut down once power goes low.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable in PowerChute and SNMP can help me out, I'm really lost at why it doens't work....

Hi,

I reviewed the Synology Knowledge Base library and did not find any information on how to set up Diskstation as a trap receiver. There is a document that discusses Diskstation Manager communication with SNMP management software. SNMP service (at Control Panel > Terminal & SNMP > SNMP) allows users to monitor Synology NAS with network management software. Currently, SNMPv1, SNMPv2c and SNMPv3 protocols are supported. https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/AdminCenter/system_snmp

I already contacted Synology, they claim it is a problem of configuring the PowerChute software.

Can you take a look at my config and tell me if I set it up correctly?

The bottom right in my screenshot-compilation is from my Synology NAS, where I configured the reception of SNMP.

I am not familiar with how Synology handles SNMP traps however I would expect the system would be listening for traps on port 162 not 161. Port 161 is used for SNMP set, get, walk.

What happens when you press trap receiver test? Do you see an error in PowerChute or does it show as trap sent? If sent does Synology list the test trap as received? 

I tested with PowerSNMP Manager and see the trap sent successfully and received.

Do I have to set the Powerchute-running machine's IP in every NMS IP/Host name field?

And in "trap receiver" als well? I thought I had to set the Synology's IP as trap receiver.

Is the port in "trap receiver" supposed to be the same as in "miscellaneous"?

I received the same green verification of trap sent, but Synology cannot detect a trap sent, it doens't have this kind of feature.

No. The IP can be 0.0.0.0

The IP should be the trap receiver so in your case the IP of the Synology system

I do not know what this setting is. PowerChute will send the traps to port 162

You should contact Synology support about this.

SNMP UPS Support

Your Synology NAS also supports connecting to SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) UPS devices. For details regarding hardware installation, please consult the user manual of your SNMP UPS device. Once the Synology NAS has been plugged into the device and connected to the same network, you can follow the steps below to enable UPS support.

To enable SNMP UPS support:

1. On the UPS tab, check the Enable UPS support checkbox.
2. Select SNMP UPS from the Network UPS type drop-down menu.
3. In the SNMP UPS IP address field, enter the IP address of the SNMP UPS device.
4. Select when the Synology NAS should enter Safe Mode after power failure occurs.
5. Enter the community string for the SNMP UPS device into the SNMP community field.
6. Click Apply.

Note:

• It is strongly recommended to use SNMP UPS for Synology High Availability (SHA) deployments.
• Synology NAS supports SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c UPS devices.

Just one question left:

in "SNMP Traps" and "Trap Receivers" do I set the port of the Trap Receiver to 162 oder 161?

So I finally got an answer from Synology support.

They tell me that my configuration is not supported, only direct USB to Diskstation or APC integrated networks card IN the UPS to Diskstation is ok.

Now I want to try it the other way round, attach the UPS to my Synology via USB; then use the Synology to send traps to Windows.

Can PowerChute work this way, receiving incoming SNMP traps to shutdown?

Hi Manfred,

The APC solution is to use the network management card (AP9630, AP9631). This works with PowerChute Network Shutdown.

Synology is running third party software called Network UPS Tools. You may be able to run that on your PCs for network shutdown.
