Hacking an APC 1400UPS by adding external batteries for a Matrix Battery Pa

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/19/2011

Hi,

I recently get a used APC 1400XL UPS (no power modules installed).

I need to use this a long haul UPS when the power goes out (2-5 hours on a 700W) load.

I may also have access to a Matrix UPS battery pack which I believe is also 48V and was thinking of using it with this UPS.

Any thoughts?

Note I have two sources for a Matrix UPS Battery Pack: -- see attached pics:
1. Matrix.JPG - options 1
2. matrix-battery-option-2-.png, matrix-battery-option-2-.png - option 2

Thanks.

The 1400 xl unit has 2 batteries inside witch mean it works on 24 volt dc,you can be more sure by checking inside unit battery quantity and measuring the voltage on the external batteries connectors.
if you need to connect your matrix battery pack you need to reconfigure the battery connection to get the right voltage.
but take in consideration that once you add an external battery to apc unit you have to configure the unit software by the right number of external battery pack quantity,
it is essential because other wise the charger will not deliver more amps to charge battery in a fast time.you can configure the battery number with powerchute program.
you can send me the battery specification on matrix unit and i will calculate to you the righ number you have to enter on the software.
one more thing there is a limit of battery capacity that you can add to the apc unit.

I don't work for APC but generally the company spokespeople are going to say "buy our battery packs" and "we won't warantee hacking projects".

I will point you to my own battery hacking guide:
Referenced content removed

The items about correct voltage are especially important here. Symmetras may run at a significantly different battery voltage from the Smart-UPS, and you may blow up the UPS circuitry or fry the batteries, up to and including boiling the acid and exploding the vented hydrogen gas.

Proceed very cautiously.
