We have a SMART UPS-1500 with Firmware Revision: 601.3.D.
The NMC IS:
Model Number: AP9617
Hardware Revision: A10
Application module information
Name: sumx
Version: v2.1.0
APC OS(AOS) information
Name: aos
Version: v2.1.1
As you can see, we are behind on Firmware version. I downloaded apc_hw02_aos355_smx355. How do I istall this onto the unit and will it cause the unit to shutdown?
Also, do I need to upgrade the SMART UPS-1500 firmware???
Thanks - Sean

Hello,
For starters, you cannot upgrade the EEPROM firmware on the UPS itself, that is not flash-upgradeable. But for the firmware that you downloaded, it will affect the card only. When you run the executable it will ask you to input the Network Card IP address. Do so, and then enter the Username/Password parameters. Then continue with the upgrade. It will notify you when it is complete and for the duration of the time you are doing the upgrade, you will not be able to communicate with the card other than ping.

I couldn't tell you either way. All I've been told is that when customers ask, it is not upgradeable, the EEPROM chip would have to be replaced. Therefore I'm suspecting it something APC Engineering takes control of

Hi all. Apologies for bringing this thread back from the dead, but I've got an old but very little-used Smart UPS 1500 (SUA1500I) which I recently recovered and it doesn't seem to me that the original question has been answered clearly enough (to me, at least).
After long searches, I've come to the conclusion that installing the latest firmware (PowerNet MIB v4.1.6) isn't very straightforward as the official update wizard doesn't support my model. I ran into a few posts of people who managed to do it via the serial port, but sadly they never got into specifics or linked to unavailable webpages.
So far I've downloaded a MIB file which I would need to install in some way. Do I absolutely need a network management card? I've seen that the AP9617 is still available - would it be enough to do the trick?
Please feel free to mention any thread/webpage where the procedure is thoroughly discussed - I've been searching a lot to no avail. Thanks!

Hi,
SUA1500I is not firmware upgradable the user as it is an older UPS generation that did not support field firmware upgrades by users. Newer generation UPS models like those that start with model prefix SMT, SMC, SRT, SMX (or in summary, those that have an LCD display on the front) support firmware upgrades to them and it can be done via a Network Management Card 2 (AP9630/31) and Firmware Upgrade Wizard using a file we provide for those UPS models only.
Adding a UPS network management card for your UPS won't help you upgrade the UPS since upgrading the UPS isn't option to begin.
The PowerNet MIB is only used for users who use a Network Management Card and SNMP for network management/monitoring of the UPS. If users use a Network Management Card, like AP9617 you mentioned, it (AP9617) supports firmware upgrade on it but that would be it.
Hope that helps clarify.

Thanks for your reply, Angela. I was misled by a page on the APC website that lists the SUA1500I firmware as upgradeable - here it is:
And as the firmware was quite recent, I was eager to try to install it. Cheers!

Ohh, I see. Yes, I don't think that should be listed since an SNMP MIB cannot be loaded on to a UPS. Sorry for the confusion you were put through!
