Hi
I am setting up PowerChute Business Edition for email notification. I have read that SMTP only works without authentication, so it should be fine for me as I have Exchange running on the same server (I am running SBS2003) and authentication is not required locally. (I have the SBS monitoring setup without it asking for authentication). However the Test email always fails. I cannot understand why, does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers.
Dave

I am running XP Pro service pack 3 and using the agent web interface on port 3052.
I looked for the Console GUI software download but couldnt find it on the apc site. Does the Console GUI offer more options then the web interface?

I have a SUA1000 connected to my PC with the serial cable and have had no luck receiving email or broadcast notifications. I dont have a local SMTP server in my network so I used the smtp server that works with Outlook (smtp.comcast.net). Does the PowerChute Business Edition software work without having a local smtp server?
Is there a way to get broadcast notifications to the PC that the unit is connected to?
Thanks

it is required that you use a local SMTP server or else you'd have to rig something up with SMTP relay. an external mail server will not work.
in regards to notifications, what OS is this you arent to configure the notifications for? the "Notifications" option utilizes the Windows Messenger server in Windows which is no longer used in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. So you'd want to make sure that service is enabled and running on a supported OS. Let me know what you are using and we can see if we can get it to work.
I will have to look up how it works in Linux, netware, etc cause I forget right this second.
also, are you accessing just the agent web interface on port 3052 to make configuration changes or are you using the PCBE console GUI?

to use the console, you have to pay for the deluxe version. i like the web interface better personally. it has a couple more options to tweak and is a lot easier to use.

hi dave,
[check out this link for the basics to check|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2682] and see if that gets you anywhere.
i'd start with this step from the article:
Type the IP address of the SMTP mail server and type in the # 25 in the Port Name field, then press connect.
1. Go to Start | Run
2. Type Telnet
3. Type Open
If this fails, your SMTP server is not properly configured.

Hi
Thanks for the ultra quick response. I have checked and it seems my smtp server is not configured correctly according to that. As I cannot telnet to it. Although SBS and email has and is all working perfectly.

Hi
I have just fixed it! It was the Mcafee Antivirus blocking the executable SMTP access. Thanks for the input.
