I forgot to unplug my test load (resistive 1000W) from the UPS when starting it up WITHOUT utility power.
I pressed the test button once to start the UPS, and then held it to force the output active on battery (no 230V connected). Result: Fireworks! Two IRFB4710 are totally burned out.
Is this normal to happen if the UPS is started on battery with a load attached?
Yes, I know the UPS should always start with utility power connected...

Well, it was an exciting way for the UPS to say goodbye...

I don't think so. The UPS should be able to start without utility. Judging by the fireworks, something may be wrong with that unit.
