* Just purchased this unit on eBay with a no-DOA guarantee.
* But the unit shows absolutely no sign of life. (It must have had life for seller to offer guarantee.)
* Will new batteries be at risk if the unit has a problem? Does it pay to try?
* These units are readily available w/o batteries, So I can buy another with the refund and I will have batteries - so long as they are not shot-up by the current host very punny.)
* The attached pics should have all the info.

The eBay seller has agreed to my compromise:
bq. He refunds $75 in exchange for my "gamble" on the purchase of new batteries.
* At best the unit will work.* At worst, it will kill these new batteries.* The other possibility is that the unit will not work, but I will have fresh new batteries to put into a replacement unit.Thank you.

Thank you for the response.
I have tried the "cold-boot" test. Nothing. No red, yellow, or green lights at any stage. Zip, zero, zilch.

Hi Aremkay,
There is a 50/50 chance that it might or might not work with new batteries installed. The unit is already 10 years old and we're not sure if the battery that came with it has been replaced already. If you plug the UPS into the wall outlet, do you see any red or green LED that lights up at the back of the unit? From the picture that was posted, it does show that the unit has a battery on it. While the UPS is unplug, press and hold the "I/Test" button doing this process would cause the UPS to emit a short and a long beep. As soon as you hear the long beep release the button, this should cold start the UPS. It works like you are jump starting a car. Were you able to do this process? If you do, the UPS would run on battery.
Buying a new battery is really a trial and error, check first if you could borrow a battery to test the unit first. The battery part number that is compatible with this UPS is the RBC12. For a better solution, I would recommend trading this UPS to get a newer model via the APC TradeUPS program. This program offers you a discounted price on the UPS that you'll be getting.

It is either a totally dead battery or unit. I am not sure if the eBay seller would offer to get the unit back but it is worth to try. If this is not possible, I suggest that you get a new UPS instead. As I have posted earlier it can be exchanged to a new UPS via the APC TradeUPS program.
