Controlled shutdown of Hyper-V and VM servers when UPS battery power is low

Hello,
This is my first time on the forum, although I have been following it for quite some time.

I currently have a problem and would like to know if the community could help me.

In a nutshell, we have a UPS and we want that, when it is at 15% - 20% battery, it shuts down in a controlled way the Hyper-V servers and the VMs inside them.

To put some context, we have a UPS: "Smart-UPS SRT 3000" that powers two Hyper-V servers (both Windows server 2016 and with Hyper-V version 10.0.14393.0). Within these Hyper-V there are a total of 3 virtual machines, 1 in one server Hyper-V and 2 more in the another Hyper-V.

What we want to do is that, when the UPS battery reaches 15% or 20% of charge, it automatically performs a controlled shutdown of, first the VMs and then the physical Hyper-V servers.

In addition, I have added the IP addresses of the two Hyper-V servers in the "PowerChute Network Shutdown Clients Configuration" part of the UPS configuration tab (accessed via web).

From here, I would like to know how to proceed or if you can provide me with some guidance, I see too much information and all very different from each other.

Do you know if this would be possible and how to do it?

Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards.

@dsm1

Are you running SCVMM?

Are the hosts in a failover cluster?

Have you enabled VM migration or would you like to?

Have you install PowerChute Network Shutdown on the hosts?

Are both host connected to the same outlet group on the UPS?

Hello,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Answering your questions:
1) We do not use SCVMM, it is a simple environment with two physical servers, each is a Hyper-V server and with a total of 5 VMs.

2) There is no failover cluster.
It is 2 windows server 2016 servers, each with a Hyper-V server mounted with their respective VMs.

3) We have not enabled VM migration between hosts and, at this time, have no intention of doing so.

4)Yes, both Hype-V servers have the "PowerChute Newtwork Shutdown" installed and configured, added to the powerchute clienst and in the outlet group

.

To power off the Hyper-V hosts you can configure the Runtime remaining below threshold under Events in PowerChute. PowerChute uses time not percentage so you would have to calculate the time based on battery charge percentage. Click on the question mark in the top right of the page for more information on the settings.

To power off the VMs before the host you should configure Virtualization Settings in PowerChute.
