Confusing Problems after water damage

Hello,

last week we had a water damage in our company and now it seems that the USP is broken.

The warning lamp for battery replacements twinkles and the web interface of the USP says that "On Line, No batteries installed, No Other Alarms Present"

(Logging says the same: "UPS: No batteries installed cleared"

But to test it anyway I unplugged every component from the USP except the telephone system which needs very few power und unplugged the power supply to the USP.

The result was, that the telephone system shut down in a second. So the USP did not even bridged a second.

No I'm considering that not only the battery is broken but also the other hardware of the USP.

Is there any opportunity to test it?

Hey...

thanks for the .exe

The first run encountered an error (Could not connect to FTP Server)

But the second execution pass through with no error (Whatever undecided)

I will test the UPS on Monday when the office is empty and the Servers are not needed wink

Moreover the UPS  spat out a new Error smile

UPS: Refused a self-test; UPS is overloaded.

Any Idea what that means?

I attached the new log-files - the firmware update was about 15:10, so it seems that the event logging doesn't say anything now laughing

For the case that we dont find out if the rest of the UPS is broken.

Is there a possibility to buy the battery and all the other parts of it seperately so that we can test the UPS firstly with new batteries and in case it does not work buy the rest of it.

Hello,

Can you provide the exact model of the UPS from the white sticker on the back of the UPS?

Furthermore, can you provide the full log files from the network management card? I am making an educated guess that you have an older management card firmware so you can use the instructions listed here for downloading log files please -> How can I download Event, Data, Configuration, and Debug files from my Network Management Card? | FA...

I'll just need at least data.txt and event.txt please to review to fully understand the issue. The battery could be the issue or the UPS and battery as you mentioned.

Ok, thank you for the logs. Your firmware on that NMC must be older so I used a newer card to compare the event codes so I could better understand them with today's wording.

Anyway, you have messages like you described already with self test failed, batteries not installed properly and then the clearing event for batteries now installed.

How old are these batteries in there? This could be just legitimate bad batteries and because they are old/dead/failing, are also disappearing in the UPS's "eyes" if you will.

Also, if you're interested, I think we could update the network management card too since its out of date. I don't think its going to fix anything with the batteries but make the logging better and easier to understand.

It appears to be an AP9617/18/19 - you can confirm that under Help->About system in the firmware you have now.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll point you to the right file and instructions to update if you're not sure how.

Hey Angela,

the batteries are from 2005 so it is definitely possible that they are dead.

I just want to check if the rest of the UPS is still functional. Would a firmware Upgrade help me to find out? Then I would prefere to update it 🙂

The Model Number is AP9617

Hi again captaincandy

No, I don't think a firmware update will really help fix anything but it certainly does not hurt before you go spend money on batteries. Also, maybe the messages will make a little more sense.

Attached to my post is the latest copy of firmware and if you need help updating, reference How do I upgrade the firmware on an APC Network Management Card? | FAQs | Schneider Electric US

Did you see what firmware you had loaded on there? If it is below AOS 2.0.2, you'll need to do a special step in the procedure if you choose a manual method (explained in the kbase). The wizard embedded in the file I attached will do that step automatically.

Let me know if you have any questions.

You were getting the same error code before, just worded differently wink

If you compare the old and new event logs between the change in firmware version, they are both error code 0x0106 which used to be UPS: Invalid internal diagnostic self-test. but now is worded as UPS: Refused a self-test; UPS is overloaded.

Anyway, I inquired further and this is still indicative of a battery issue because its most likely that the batteries are overloaded in a sense, versus the UPS (since we know it is not almost over loaded VA/watts wise).

So, still thinking all of these messages are battery related.

The only part of these UPSs that are serviceable are the battery. So, you can check with your reseller about being able to return the batteries if they do not fix the issue (after charging for 24 hours) but beyond that, there are no other parts to buy that we would sell unless you find a qualified repair shop.

I am fairly confident this stems from a battery issue as it stands now and I'd recommend buying new batteries and letting them charge up before you try to do anything and see what you get smile
