Configure IP address of NMC through USB port

This question was originally posted by Marc on APC forums on 8/8/2013

Hi there, I would like to set the ip address of my Smart-UPS SUA3000rmi2u. It has a AP9617 NMC onboard. I've tried to set the IP address using the Device IP Utility of APC and I tried to set it using the command ARP -s . Both failed. By the way the NMC works as I can see the MAC address of it on my switch. Also the leds on the networkport of the NMC are working. One is steady green and the other is blinking organge. I also made several attempts to hardware reset the NMC via the reset switch at the back. Also with that no luck. No I'm trying my luck using APC AP-9827 SIMPLE SIGNALING UPS CABLE USBRJ45 to USB. With the latter I'm trying to telnet into the APC. With this also no luck. I wish I had bought an APC RS232 to RS232 cable instead of the USB one. But I actually reasoned that this wouldn't make any sense as I cannot get my hands easily on a PC with a RS232 interface. Nowadays who can? So now what to do? Does anyone have a clue?

For reference, here is the article on how to set up Network Management Card and all acceptable methods -> How do you make a Network Management Card communicate on a network? | FAQs | Schneider Electric US

You cannot use USB and telnet is a networking protocol so I was not sure what you meant there.

A solid green status LED (the one with the checkmark next to it) indicates it has an IP address on it. Can you confirm 100% that is the one that is solid green (versus the link LED that says 10/100)? If it is indeed the status LED, it makes sense ARP is not working since it will only work on an unconfigured card but if you knew what IP range to check, Device IP wizard v5.X.X could search for an IP range.

Pressing the reset button only reboots the card and the only other function for it on this card is for resetting the password.

My thought is unless you can somehow either search a range of IPs that could've been on this card with the Device IP Wizard tool (and you need to be on the same network for that to work), you're going to need to use the serial port somehow or get a USB to serial adapter. Alternatively, I am not sure if on your switch there is anyway to figure out what IP is on it or if you can do a packet sniff on it somehow. The card does default to bootp/DHCP with DHCP option 43 required by default but it sounds like this IP address that I suspect is already was configured was not done via DHCP since you'd probably know that already.
