Can a SYPM4KU be used as a SYPM?

Rather than give you the long story, I'll just keep it short. I've got one of the tall Symmetra's in the beige cabinet. Can I put a SYPM4KU in it?

Bill

I wasn't planning on trying it. I was just addressing your puzzlement over the question. The differences, as you state them, would only be noticed if I were to actually try to insert the unit.

Now you have me interested in your "long story". Given the modules are not the same form factor, and therefore will not even engage into each other's Symmetra chassis, the question strikes me as odd.

I haven't laid one each of them side by side, but they seem much more alike than you make them out to be. The major difference is the locking mechanism up front for the SYPM4KU. I didn't try to fit it in the UPS, so I don't know if the 4KU won't work because of any "stops" in the case, but form factor-wise, they seem awfully close - same height, width, length and weight.

You're right, in that their sheet metal is essentially identical, however their activation/locking mechanisms are not compatible with the "wrong" frames, nor do they identify themselves as the power modules the UPS' intelligence expects, which will lead to strange behavior.

The activation/locking mechanisms of Symmetra modules achieve 2 things:
- They guarantee the module is OFF at the time it is engaged/disengaged in the frame
- They guarantee the module cannot be shifted while in use, which would be extremely dangerous

Please do not attempt to use modules not designed for a specific Symmetra system. Doing so will void any warranty you may have, and put your equipment and your life at risk.
