Cable Modem and SmartUPS

This was originally posted on APC forums on 10/10/2008

Hello there

I have recently taken out a Business Broadband package and was wondering how I can protect my cable modem with my Smart UPS (I have the tower one that looks like: http://priceguru.in/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/apc-smart-ups-sua2200uxi.jpg)

Before we had a Leased Line and had a Cisco router which used the standard old "kettle" type plugs that came with the UPS so it was no problem, however, my new cable modem which looks like http://www.chetnet.co.uk/articles/admin/images/255%20mini.JPG and is apparently an "Ambit" which uses an adapter plug.

Is there anyway I can protect the cable modem from power outages with my UPS for a cable modem like that? If so, what type of lead would I need to buy?

Thank you

yes it is of help.

you will need some type of 230v power supply with a frequency of 50hz in addition to the correct plug type so the adapter will fit.

just another note, personally, why are they giving you this piece of equipment that isnt either 120 or 208/240v @ 60hz which is more a US standard.

doesnt make sense to me 😕

take a look at our protect net devices: http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=145

The model of PV is the only one we have for coaxial protection.

Hi there, thanks for your reply

Sorry, I don't mean to just protect it against surges. I mean for the adapter (power supply) to be from the UPS so it's protected against power loss

Thank you

Thanks for that!

The plug is similar to http://www.sunpower-uk.com/public/ranges/images/400/EA1015.jpg - so the adapter is where the plug is (and it's a UK plug)

I was wondering whether there's some type of lead that can plug into the UPS that allows a UK plug into the other end? Dunno

:)

well, i am assuming the power requirement is the same as the UK then, right? UK is 240v at 50Hz i believe so you'd need some type of adapter plug as well as a transformer to change the power if that is the case.

the only thing that we have is an international plug adapter but that will not transform the power, it would only change the plug type. i also only thing it converts NEMA 5-15 outlet types now that i think about it.

let me know about the power as well but it sounds like thats the other issue.

Thank you very much for your continued help...

On the plug itself (the big black plug which has the adapter built in I guess) it says:

OEM
AC ADAPTOR
MODEL NO: AD-101A2D
INPUT: 230V~50Hz 140mA
OUTPUT: 10V-1.2A

Is that any help?
