Hello all,
I have the following set-up.
APC Smart-UPS SC420 with a serial cable connected to a Buffalo Terasation (NAS).
These are the setting on the APC.
When any of the following ACTIONS occur begun shutdown.
Low Battery
Time on Battery Threshold Exceeded
Power Failed
I have the following under the protected system.
Run-Time Remaining Threshold: 5 mins
Low Battery Signal: 7 mins
OS Shutdown delay: 180 second (3 mins)
I configured the UPS via my PC using the serial connection.
When I configured the UPS nothing was connected to it.
Next I powered down the UPS
Next I connect the serial cable from UPS to NAS. (PC is out of the loop now)
Next I powered on the UPS waiting until after the self-test and then waiting another 60 second.
Next I powered the NAS which is connected to the UPS
NAS starts up and I can see it on the network.
Now I disconnect the UPS from the power outlet and the UPS goes into battery mode.
5 seconds later the NAS is starting it's power shut down (I assume the UPS told it)
28 seconds later the NAS is turned off
3 mins after pulling the power the UPS turns off.
So it works (sort off).
The NAS is the ONLY load that the UPS is going to have and with just that LOAD the UPS can run on the battery for 65 mins (fully charge). What I would like to do it the following.
IF POWER GOES OUT
1) UPS goes into battery mode
2) UPS counts 5 mins **BEFORE** sending a signal to NAS to start shutdown
(The power may come on during that time frame)
3) At 5:01 UPS tells NAS to begin shut down
4) at 10:01 UPS shuts down.
How can I do this?
Thanking you in advance,
A.Herrera

when you configure powerchute business edition on the PC, you are configuring the shutdown parameters for just the PC.
to get the NAS to shutdown, you need to connect the communications cable and then edit the settings on the NAS itself so it knows when to shutdown. the configuration you did on powerchute with the PC doesnt change any settings for the NAS.
[i found this link, don't know if it will help|http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/board/message?board.id=0101&message.id=89&query.id=41096#M89]
[also, take a look at this which i think will help you best|http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Activate_UPS_support_on_TS_Live]. essentially, you need to configure settings on the NAS itself to get this to work, once you verify communication between the NAS and UPS.

Thank you. Guess I have so more reading to do. The only options I have on the NAS are
Sync with UPS - ENABLE or DISABLE
UPS auto shutdown - ENABLE or DISABLE
UPDATE
Thanks again but those links are for other types of NAS from buffalo. =(
I'm not sure it's possible to do what I want but I'm happy just being able to get it to auto-shut off when it goes on battery mode. Lost one of my hard drives a month ago on the NAS due to a power failure. So would rather it shut down right even if the lighst do come back on then lose another drive and possibly my data!
