I thought I would add a "success-story" update to this post. I am running the "kissing-cousin" of the Back-UPS Pro 1500 in that I am running a Back-UPS BX1000G to power my CentOS 6.3 File Server, a second CentOS 6.3 MythTV recorder box and a Windows 7 HP Slimline Gaming Unit. I have the BX1000G plugged by USB cable into the Server and am running apcupsd {http://www.apcupsd.com/} as a service on the server. It then broadcasts status to the apcupsd instances on the Mythtv and Gaming PC. With Power Failure the Myth and Game Units shut down at 25% Batt Charge and/or 6 mintues remaining. The server shuts down at 15% Batt charge and 3 minutes remaining. Using the PDF Manual from there site it set up fairly easily. You do have to have either the EPEL or RPMFORGE repos configured on your CentOS system as centos.org does not ship apcupsd itself. Note: if you use the EPEL repo there is also a apcupsd-gui which graphs performance. WHile not supported here, from what I read APC has been cooperative with the apcupsd folks and for this I am thankful as apcupsd works great on my linux systems.

does the OS have any native support if you just plug it in? I have seen that on redhat. if not, you might want to look into third party tools that we don't support but they have their own support community -> apcupsd (www.apcupsd.org)

No, I did not find a native support in CentOS able to control energy failure and enabling the shutdown ...
I found this:
http://pkgs.org/centos-6-rhel-6/epel-x86_64/apcupsd-3.14.8-2.el6.x86_64.rpm.html
maybe it can work with Back-UPS ...
Thanks

Thanks again
